Blind Artist Ruben Parga will show over fifty pieces of his art in an exhibition entitled "Insight" at the Workmen's Circle gallery, from Sunday, November 17, 2013, through January 31, 2014. 

 

Opening Reception: Nov. 17, 2-4 p.m.

 

Featuring musical performances by vocal ensembles, Visionary, the Braille Institute A Cappella Ensemble, of which Parga is a member; and Blindside, a contemporary a cappella quartet in its premiere performance. Both groups are directed by composer, arranger and backbeat orchestrator Sean Gorecki.

 

In his native Mexico, Ruben Parga started exploring the world of art as a child. At the Universidad Latinoamericana in Mexico City he studied graphic design and photography. His early employment saw him working in sales, human resources, teaching photography, and cultural promotion for the government of Mexico. He began his formal study of art at Pasadena City College, followed by two years in Paris at the Institut des Beaux Arts. Back in Los Angeles, he worked for an architectural firm producing drawings of interior and exterior designs.

 

After going completely blind in December 2009, Parga continued his exploration of techniques and materials at art classes at the Braille Institute. His primary focus has been ceramic sculpture, but also printmaking, basketry, and mosaics. His work is represented in many private collections.

 

"In the transition to a new way of living," Parga says, "my blindness stopped me for a while. But my drive to create art, to offer the world my particular insight, was stronger than my physical limitation. I know now that blindness will never stop my impulse to keep making art."

 

Parga is known for his series of ceramic masks, depicting the range of emotions known to the human condition. His earlier paintings will also be on display in the exhibition.

 

"My life is not over. I refuse to stop growing," Parga says.

WHERE DID THESE DISCUSSIONS LEAD?  WHAT RESOLUTIONS WERE PASSED?  HOW WILL THEY BE IMPLEMENTED?  WHAT CAN WE DO TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CHANGING FACE OF LABOR? HOW DO WE BROADEN OUR GRAND COALITION TO DEFEAT THE RIGHT-WING?

Gordon, Chair of the SoCal Chapter of the National Writers Union and former director of Workmen's Circle SoCal, as well as Rossana Cambron, reporter on the convention for People's World on-line.  Be part of the solution and learn how you can participate in the struggle to make real changes in the lives of American working people and our allies among the 99%.

Thanks to your attendance, her Conversational Yiddish group is thriving with world-recognized Yiddish teacher, scholar, translator and raconteuse Hadasa Cytrynowicz. 

  

Originally from Lodz, and later a long-time resident of Brazil, Hadasa brings a wealth of experience and stories, songs, proverbs and sayings, poetry and interesting topics for discussion to her group. Each session is an hour and 15 minutes.  Admission is by voluntary donation.
