Greetings!
It is my sincerest hope that this week's Ebriv finds you and yours in a happy place as we welcome 5774 into our lives. Let us not forget, though, that today we remember the 12th anniversary of the September 11th attack, and that for many, the New Year(s) have yet to feel sweet since that day in 2001.
The past cannot be changed; but we can all take the time to reflect on where we are and how we are lending our time to advancing our communities, and the world, in a positive, amicable way. May we all take a stance as progressive, humanistic people to commit to working for a shenere un besere velt far ale...
Sincerely,
Tera Greene Interim Director Workmen's Circle SoCal/Arbeter Ring

Hadasa's Book Party! Sept 22 | 2PM
|
Come to Hadasa's Book Party!
In the Sukkah at Arbeter Ring
Sunday, September 22 at 2 pm | | Hadasa Cytrynowicz |
Our resident Yiddish conversation group leader, Hadasa Cytrynowicz, has just published a book, and we're celebrating! The date is Sunday, September 22 at 2 pm in the Sukkah in the back of our center at 1525 S. Robertson Blvd. Everyone is invited! There will be music, food, and books for signing. Here is a brief review and appreciation of Hadasa's new book: Reading Hadasa Cytrynowicz's book, Waiting for the Train and Other Stories, is like getting to know a new friend. Over coffee, a glass of wine, on a leisurely walk, stories tumble out. Some took place quite a while ago, in the 1930s and '40s, and some are more contemporary. Some are quite sad - it was a lousy time for Jews in Europe - yet some contain hidden kernels of contentment and a well-earned joy. They are not exactly chronological, but who tells the story of her life in a straight line?
We begin on the cover, a sweet picture of a young mother and child. As we open the book and turn its pages, the stories travel from adulthood, to childhood, to adolescence, and back to the present, with poignant remembrances small and large. We go from Poland to wartime Soviet Union, to Israel, to Brazil, and even to a UN Displaced Persons Camp, as Hadasa, and finally her husband and family, find "home," a place "where there is bread."
This is a wonderful book, these stories of Hadasa's life, the privations of war, the journey to so many places. How lucky we are that her journey brought her to Los Angeles, and to our Arbeter Ring, for it is here that we can share her life.
Welcome home, Hadasa!

The Workmen's Circle / Arbeter Ring wishes to thank the Chaim Schwartz Foundation for this much-needed and timely award that will be used to continue Arts-based, Yiddish programming in Los Angeles.
About the Foundation: The Chaim Schwartz Foundation was created upon the death of his daughter, Sandra Schwartz Tangri, to carry on his life work of preserving and studying Yiddishkeit - that is, Yiddish language, culture, theater and art. It is a charitable, philanthropic fund; which is to say, it grants small amounts of money to recognized non-profit organizations for the purpose of preserving and enriching Yiddishkeit. The Chaim Schwartz Foundation has no paid staff and a minimal operating budget, and its only activity is to disburse monies through its small grants program. The Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Extra! Extra! Workmen's Circle Members in Action...!!!
|
On Saturday, September 7, 2013, Director Emeritus, Eric Gordon, and Chairmentsh, Ruth Judkowitz, attended the City of Hope Centennial Gala in Pasadena, CA.
Ruth and Eric attended as invited, honored guests on behalf of the Workmen's Circle SoCal/Arbeter Ring and were asked to stand to be introduced to all of the Doctors and guests in attendance of this extraordinary event!
Early in our history, it was Workmen's Circle members who established the City of Hope, originally for the care of tuberculosis patients, now a world-famous medical center whose philosophy still calls for free medical treatment.
We are proud of Ruth and Eric and happy they were able to enjoy such a fabulous gala! To be recognized is well-deserved not only for the Workmen's Circle, but also well-earned by Eric and Ruth for their place in the legacy of our organization.
