A message from Interim Director Tera Greene
Tera DJs at TG Film Fest - 11.18.11In 2011, I was asked to be the Social Media volunteer for the Workmen's Circle / Arbeter Ring.  Shortly, I was "promoted" to Social Media Coordinator, sharing my time to help get this weekly Ebriv delivered, helping to get the WC to 100 likes on Facebook and more.

I started volunteering at the tail-end of my fellowship tenure as a Community Engagement Fellow with Birthright Israel Next: LA and just before I began my Jeremiah Fellowship cohort with the Southern California chapter of Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership For Justice (formerly Progressive Jewish Alliance).  The more I volunteered with the Workmen's Circle, the more I found ways to share my passion for fusing arts-based programming with social justice.   I've gotten to be innovative and supported as a social entrepreneur via having a place to host the 10'¢ Cinema Slama Queer Open Mic and Film Night for Ten Cents, a series of Food Justice Matinees, and even as a DJ for events at the WC (inset photo).

On a more personal level, getting to serve with the So. California District Committee in 2012 before relocating temporarily, attending Ben Froman's 90th (and 91st birthday celebrations!), and events like the yummy Khanike Freylekh have allowed me to learn, grow and engage with diverse audiences comprised of all ages, while finding my voice as a community leader and being authentic in how I choose to approach my Jewishness.

The WC has been dear to my heart ever since I started volunteering with the organization.  My first experience at the Workmen's Circle was attending an event with spiritual community, Ikar, in 2009, while I was a Moishe House Foundation resident of Mar Vista (Los Angeles house).  I never would have guessed that I would be where I am now with this organization.  I am happy - and honored - to be back in Los Angeles to help The Workmen's Circle in as many ways as possible as Interim Director.  Plus, I get to work closely and forge deeper connections with people like Eric Gordon, Hershl Hartman, Ruth Judkowitz, our entire District Committee as a whole, and Sholem.

Please check out the wonderful events we have coming up, including our Over The Rainbow Fall Fundraiser, which will be a once-in-a-lifetime musical dinner awards event you will remember for a long while.  Can't attend on October 5th? Please still consider contributing as low as $25 to help us build our Yellow Brick Road to Success or take out a Tribute Ad.  We are in a critical period of necessary growth here at the Workmen's Circle / Arbeter Ring and your support will ensure that we continue future secular and progressive Jewish education and programming for the Greater Los Angeles area.

Looking forward to getting to know you all a little better!

Now the complete collection will be recorded on a CD to be released in 2014, with singers Michael Alpert, Daniel Kahn, Judy Bressler, Vira Lozinsky, Yankl Falk, Anthony Russell, and Elizabeth Schwartz, with arrangements by Yale Strom. Come to a Labor Listening Session

Come to a Labor Listening Session on Monday, August 26th!

Attention, all Arbeter Ring members and friends!

Working people must be heard!

That message becomes clearer every day as we continue the struggle for fair wages, immigrant reform, lower student debt, and union recognition.

The AFL-CIO, in advance of its convention here in L.A. in September, has issued a call for Listening Sessions, a way for working people to come together and add our creative ideas and strategies for building the labor movement. (See aflcio2013.org for more information.)

The Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle), true to its history and philosophy, is very excited about the direction the AFL-CIO is taking. We understand the importance of strengthening and broadening the labor movement. We are working men and women with varying amounts of experience in the labor movement, eager to participate in the struggle to make real changes in the lives of American workers.

We look forward to a dynamic event with full participation from the attendees so that our Report Back to the Convention becomes an important piece of the conversation. Our Arbeter Ring is well-known in the labor/social justice community, and we have agreed to co-sponsor and host this event. We encourage a sizable and engaged turn-out. We invite you to attend, and to circulate this flyer to inform interested friends and colleagues.

Our Listening Session takes place on Monday, August 26, from 7-10 pm at the Workmen's Circle at 1525 S. Robertson Blvd. Unions such as CSEA, SAG/AFTRA, National Writers Union, etc., as well as organizations that we have a relationship with, such as LAANE, CLUE and, importantly, the general public, have been invited to participate.

Recognizing the need for full participation of rank and file workers (and non-union workers), the AFL-CIO is encouraging us to participate in three main areas of discussion:

  1. Changing the labor movement to speak for working people now and in the future through growth, innovation and political action
  2. Creating a voice for all in the global economy
  3. Building genuine, durable community partnerships and effective grassroots power

We look forward to your attendance. We are aiming for a full house on the 26th.

Please contact our District Committee member Susan Gosman at suenu35@aol.com or at 323-899-8875 if you have any specific questions.
