| Workmen's Circle's LA history |
An interesting article in Perush: An Online Journal of Jewish Scholarship and Interpretation has an interesting article which includes contributions from The Workmen's Circle! It's called "Socialism, Radicalism, and the Jewish Labor Movement in Los Angeles: History and Historiography" by Caroline Luce (UCLA). |
| Help preserve Workmen's Circle's LA history in photos! |
Workmen's Circle has a rich but almost forgotten history in the labor and cooperative history of Los Angeles! LA WORCS! The Los Angeles Worker Ownership Resources and Cooperative Services is doing a feasibility study as a first step in creating local cooperative bakeries in Los Angeles once again and would like to acknowledge the long history of cooperation and baking in Los Angeles by putting pictures of the original Cooperative Bakery on the walls of our bakeries. Please search your personal collections of photos and allow us to copy and preserve any that are depicting any aspect of the Baker's struggle and Cooperative Bakery circa roughly 1926.

The Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle) Seder
Immigration Rights
20 Nisan 5773 Passover Seder
Sunday, March 31, 2013, 1 pm
1525 S. Robertson Blvd.
Our annual Arbeter Ring Seder is a beautiful celebration of our heritage and culture. We sing of the hidden Jews of Spain during the Inquisition, the martyrs and heroes of the ghettos of Poland, the Jews of Soviet Russia, the seekers of global peace and all champions of liberation and immigrant rights.
This year's seder theme, Immigration Rights, focuses on a clear path to citizenship, keeping families together, and welcoming the oppressed of the world.
Our annual Seder embodies the Workmen's Circle tradition of connecting our heritage with the human struggle for freedom from the Pharoahs of our modern-day world. Our Seder is an experience of inclusion and diversity, part of our commitment to being a progressive Jewish alternative in Southern California. Non-Jewish friends and family are always welcome.
Our program is in English, with group participation.
Songs are in English, Yiddish and Hebrew.
LIMITED SEATING! RESERVE BY MARCH 22!
Click here to download the reservation form, or call the office at (310) 552-2007 to reserve your seat today. |

MARCH 16TH AT 7 PM, screening of Shift Change
SHIFT CHANGE is a documentary film by veteran award-winning filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin. It tells the little known stories of employee owned businesses that compete successfully in today's economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces.
Equal Exchange workers discuss risk and innovation.
With the long decline in US manufacturing and today's economic crisis, millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes. The usual economic solutions are not working, so some citizens and public officials are ready to think outside of the box, to reinvent our failing economy in order to restore long term community stability and a more egalitarian way of life. There is growing interest in firms that are owned and managed by their workers. Such firms tend to be more profitable and innovative, and more committed to the communities where they are based. Yet the public has little knowledge of their success, and the promise they offer for a better life.
SHIFT CHANGE encourages support for employee ownership, and provides on-the-ground experience from a variety of enterprises and locations. Screenings have already occurred, and more are being planned, in cities around the world. The film is also expected to be presented on television, as well as in academic, public planning, business and community settings.

Support Research into a cure for HIV |
Workmen's Circle member Gerald Gerash recently organized a meeting with Congressman (and Workmen's Circle honorary board member) Henry Waxman on cure of HIV and the campaign for more funds for cure research. Leading HIV/AIDS scientists are calling for community support for more emphasis on cure research because of the significant and amazing scientific developments towards finding a cure. Prevention and treatment is just not going to end HIV/AIDS. We need a cure!
At the meeting two local eminent scientists spoke of the latest success towards a cure, Ron Mitsuyasu of UCLA and Paula Cannon of USC. Also present were four reps or executive directors of LA HIV/AIDS organizations.
Mr. Waxman was very supportive. Among his commitments, he said he would vote for the Himes-Lee Bill that authorizes $100 million for science cure research. He said he needed to study the Bill to consider being a cosponsor. We cure activists and scientists of the Campaign for a Cure need your help.
Leading HIV/AIDS scientists are saying that a cure is reasonably possible within 5 years provided the research gets done, many of which promising projects have not begun because of lack of funding. NIH allocates only 3% of its research on HIV budget for cure research!
Please encourage him to cosponsor the Bill by contacting him --- and tell your friends and organizations as well. You may email him at: Waxman.staff@mail.house.gov and/or phone him either at 310-651-1040 or in D.C. at 202-225-3976.
If you live in his District, tell him. Even if you don't live in his district, please tell him that it's important to you to find a cure and he should cosponsor the Himes-Lee Bill. He has been a leader in Congress in matters of HIV/AIDS, such as passage of the Ryan White Act (ADAP). In fact, in his 2012 election campaign, he advertised his leadership in passing the Ryan White Act. |

Sholem Model Seder 3/17 |
Sholem Seder -- A Family Affair Noon, Sunday, March 17
Westside Neighborhood School 5101 Beethoven Street, Los Angeles, CA 90066.
Time to RSVP and make plans to attend the Sholem Community's Passover Seder. The family program will begin at noon at the Westside Neighborhood School. Sholem's secular celebration of Passover acknowledges its roots as a spring festival and honors the powerful tradition of "Exodus," a symbol of freedom. As usual, we'll be reading from the Sholem hagada; we'll feature group singing; and there'll be plenty of opportunities for participation by children.
