Recommit to Worker's Rights on March 13
- We are Wisconsin Film Screening
*Please note date has changed!

March 13, 2013, 7:00 PM

March 13, 2013 is the second anniversary of the signing by Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin Act 10, which ended 60 years of progress for Wisconsin workers. WE ARE WISCONSIN, Amie Williams' award-winning documentary film, follows the day-to-day unfolding of the public outcry against Governor Walker's bill, and lets ordinary people on the ground tell the story of their American struggle to preserve basic rights and economic opportunity.

As part of a national day of recommitment to workers' rights, join Bend
the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, The Workmen's Circle, and
Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice-LA for a free screening,
followed by a discussion of next steps to put our country back on the
right track.

Sale of Cemetery Plots!
Eden Memorial Park
Limited Time Offer!
Sale of Cemetery Plots to Arbeter Ring Members!

To our members (and prospective members):

One of the historic benefits Arbeter Ring has always offered to our members is reasonably-priced cemetery plots. We have several remaining plots in the beautiful Mount Shalom South section at Eden Memorial Park which we are offering to our members at well below market rate. This section is sold out, but if plots were available there or in comparable sections, they would go for upwards of $9000 each. We are offering these plots to our members at the very attractive price of $6500. This will be your last opportunity to purchase plots from us, because we do not expect to ever make this benefit available again in Southern California.

Please contact our office at 310.552.2007 for further details.
Queer Yiddishkeit: Practice and Theory Wed Mar 6, 4 p

Queer Yiddishkeit: Practice and Theory

Jeffrey Shandler (Rutgers University), Moderator: Samuel Spinner (UCLA)

Queer Yiddishkeit-a cluster of works in literature, journalism, filmmaking, and performance art-constitutes one of the most revealing and provocative developments in contemporary Jewish culture.  These works juxtapose queerness and Yiddish in some way and do so as a means of challenging some cultural status quo.  Queer Yiddishkeit epitomizes how, at the turn of the millennium, cultural engagements with Yiddish have been reconceiving the possibilities of the language and its relationship to culture and peoplehood.  This presentation examines several examples of Queer Yiddish culture, especially performances that link Yiddish with drag, focusing on the different ways that they interrelate Yiddishness and queerness. The presentation also considers what the practices of Queer Yiddishkeit suggest for the theorizing of Yiddish now, at a crucial juncture in the language's history.

Helix Project
The Helix Project is a 3-week summer adventure, bringing full-time college and university students on an expenses paid, intensive cultural studies immersion in European Jewish cultural history. The Helix starts with a series of workshops and language training in Los Angeles, followed by a journey through the historical heartlands of Jewish life in Europe.

This summer, Helix invites you to travel with us through the contemporary republics of Belarus, Poland, and Lithuania. From the sacred to the mundane, from the liturgical to the literary, the Helix Project introduces you to the beauty and complexity of Jewish history and creates a richer, fuller, more positive and inclusive view of Jewish life than you ever imagined possible.

Applications for Helix are due at the end of February. Find out more about how to apply, visit: http://yiddi.sh/helixproject.

MARCH 16TH AT 7 PM, screening of Shift Change

SHIFT CHANGE is a documentary film by veteran award-winning filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin. It tells the little known stories of employee owned businesses that compete successfully in today's economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces.

Equal Exchange workers discuss risk and innovation.

With the long decline in US manufacturing and today's economic crisis, millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes. The usual economic solutions are not working, so some citizens and public officials are ready to think outside of the box, to reinvent our failing economy in order to restore long term community stability and a more egalitarian way of  life. There is growing interest in firms that are owned and managed by their workers. Such firms tend to be more profitable and innovative, and more committed to the communities where they are based. Yet the public has little knowledge of their success, and the promise they offer for a better life.

SHIFT CHANGE encourages support for employee ownership, and provides on-the-ground experience from a variety of enterprises and locations. Screenings have already occurred, and more are being planned, in cities around the world. The film is also expected to be presented on television, as well as in academic, public planning, business and community settings.

What could be more fascinating...
"What could be more fascinating than a week inside the heads of the great modern Jewish writers? They write about Jewish dogs, birds, and mice; about Jewish frauds, cheaters, and gangsters; about Jews in the army, in the desert, and in Christmas pageants. They show us that Jewishness is even more complicated and strange than it already seems."
-Josh Lambert, Academic Director, Great Jewish Books Summer Program

students
At the Yiddish Book Center's Great Jewish Books Summer Program, eighteen rising high school juniors and seniors will spend a week discovering and discussing Jewish stories unlike any they've ever encountered before. They will study with professors from top universities, meet prominent Jewish authors, and make new friends. The program runs from July 28 - August 4, 2013. Each participant will receive a full scholarship for the cost of tuition, room, board, and a stack of books!

Great Jewish Books "has definitely broadened my literary horizons and furthered my interest in the world of Yiddish culture," writes one former student. Tell the teens you know: Apply by March 15 to explore new horizons!
