28TH JEWISH MUSIC FESTIVAL, MARCH 2 - 12 - LOTS OF YIDDISH!
This year's Jewish Music Festival line-up includes many Yiddish-inflected events, including Shura Lipovsky, the Yiddish diva of Europe, coming direct from Amsterdam and performing with Theodore Bikel. Our Opening Night includes Polesye, a program of rarely heard Yiddish songs from the repertoire of Mariam Nirenburg. On March 9th, Avrom Sutzkever's Vilna Poems are set to music in a World Premiere to mark the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. And Yiddishist and pioneer of the klezmer revival, Michael Alpert performs with Julian Kytasty in a wonderful program of Yiddish and Ukrainian folksongs.

What could be more fascinating...
|
"What could be more fascinating than a week inside the heads of the great modern Jewish writers? They write about Jewish dogs, birds, and mice; about Jewish frauds, cheaters, and gangsters; about Jews in the army, in the desert, and in Christmas pageants. They show us that Jewishness is even more complicated and strange than it already seems."
-Josh Lambert, Academic Director, Great Jewish Books Summer Program
At the Yiddish Book Center's Great Jewish Books Summer Program, eighteen rising high school juniors and seniors will spend a week discovering and discussing Jewish stories unlike any they've ever encountered before. They will study with professors from top universities, meet prominent Jewish authors, and make new friends. The program runs from July 28 - August 4, 2013. Each participant will receive a full scholarship for the cost of tuition, room, board, and a stack of books! Great Jewish Books "has definitely broadened my literary horizons and furthered my interest in the world of Yiddish culture," writes one former student. Tell the teens you know: Apply by March 15 to explore new horizons!

Recommit to Worker's Rights on March 11
|
March 11, 2013
Time TBA
Join us for a film screening of We Are Wisconsin, during the national day of recommitment to worker's rights.
WE ARE WISCONSIN, Amie Williams' award-winning documentary film, follows the day-to-day unfolding of the public outcry against Governor Walker's bill, and lets ordinary people on the ground tell the story. The film does not rely on pundits, experts, labor leaders and media, but instead presents the Wisconsin story through the powerful voice of ordinary citizens. WE ARE WISCONSIN is an inspiring testament to the power of citizen activism.
