Yiddishkayt is teaming up with the Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring of Southern California to offer beginning Yiddish classes!
Two classes in two parts of town are starting on February 4: A Monday/Wednesday evening course, 7pm - 8:30pm, at Yiddishkayt in Koreatown
-or- A Tuesday/Thursday evening course, 7pm - 8:30pm at our building in Pico-Robertson
Tuition: $300 for the 8-week class (táke, a metsie! -- really, it's a bargain!)

National Yiddish Book Center's new program in LA on Jewish Comedy
|
Tent: Comedy is a week-long seminar in the theory and practice of comedy through a Jewish lens in Los Angeles, CA, March 17-24, 2013.
Participants will explore stand-up, improv, and sketch forms with comedians from the country's leading comedy troupes, and meet with performers and writers working in film and television at theWriters Guild Foundation. In the evenings, you'll attend comedy shows at premier venues, such as, Largo, Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater, and The Improv. In morning sessions led by Tony Michels (Univ. of Wisconsin), we'll discuss theories of Jewish comedy from Sigmund Freud to Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, and view classic performances from the dialect comedians of Vaudeville to the legendary performers of the Borsht Belt, radio, television, and the internet.

As the shortest day of the year approaches and we begin to think about the coming year, we are pleased to announce another four-session mini-course that Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring of Northern California is offering in San Francisco, co-sponsored by KlezCalifornia, beginning Thursday, January 31st. There are two upcoming San Diego talks about the new book We Are Here: Memories of the Lithuanian Holocaust. Author Ellen Cassedy will speak about her personal journey into the land of her Jewish forebears, and how the book expanded into a larger exploration of the ways in which a post-Holocaust nation is encountering its Jewish past.

Every Monday at 2 pm Yiddish Conversation class starts again on Monday, Jan. 28 Thanks to your attendance, her Conversational Yiddish group is thriving with world-recognized Yiddish teacher, scholar, translator and raconteuse Hadasa Cytrynowicz. Originally from Lodz, and later a long-time resident of Brazil, Hadasa brings a wealth of experience and stories, songs, proverbs and sayings, poetry and interesting topics for discussion to her group. Each session is an hour and 15 minutes. Admission is by voluntary donation.
Keep your Yiddish kite flying by attending this group! All levels of Yiddish are welcome. Kumt arayn!
