| Avek in der eybikayt: Henrique Cytrynowicz Z"l | | Arbeter Ring mourns the passing of Henrique Cytrynowicz at the age of 88 on January 4th. Known at various phases of his life as Hershl, Grisha, Tsvi, and more, Henrique was the husband of our beloved Yiddish Conversation Group teacher Hadasa Cytrynowicz. The name Henrique stemmed from the couple's 54 years of living in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where they rebuilt their lives after the horrors and losses of World War II. Henrique and his brothers ran a textile mill in Brazil. Two of the Cytrynowiczes' three sons live in California, motivating their move to L.A. in 2008, and leading to Hadasa's active participation in the life of our organization.
While still able to, Henrique often attended Hadasa's class, always quick to supply a Russian, Polish, Hebrew or Yiddish word upon demand. Hadasa's memoir, "Waving to the Train: Stories from My Life," will be published by Blue Thread Press later this year, the imprint of Jewish Currents magazine. Our director emeritus Eric Gordon translated the book from Hadasa's Portuguese. Contributions to Arbeter Ring in Henrique's name will be gratefully acknowledged to the family.

Volunteer Opportunity With the Yiddish Book Center's Wexler Oral History Project
|

The Yiddish Book Center's Wexler Oral History Project is seeking five to six volunteers to serve as shraybers, oral history field processors.
Working from home computers, volunteers will dive into our growing oral history collection, mining interviews for great stories and preparing them for inclusion in the collection's fully-accessible online archive. This opportunity is open to qualified applicants across the country and around the world!
The Wexler Oral History Project is a growing collection of over 250 in-depth video interviews, exploring Yiddish cultural topics and issues of modern Jewish identity. Oral history shraybers will help us achieve our goal of expanding access to this rich collection. First, we review full-length interviews to identify the most compelling moments -- a wonderful story, a rich description, a poignant reflection. Next, we write a clear abstract that summarizes the main topics discussed in the interview. Finally, we assign keywords that researchers and the general public can use to search within and across interviews.
We need your help! We need volunteers interested in Jewish stories to watch each interview, identify compelling excerpts, assign keywords, and write a clear and engaging synopsis.
For more information and to read the full job description: yiddishbookcenter.org/oral-history-shraybers-field-processors PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to know Yiddish to do this work! However, any familiarity with Yiddish language, culture, and history is a plus.
Please click on the link below to fill out the online application by January 13, 2013: yiddishbookcenter.org/field-processor-application
