| Seminar Series - "Changing The World: Our Legacy in Yiddish Culture" |
Sunday, Feb. 26, 10:15 AMWestside Neighborhood School, 5401 Beethoven Street, Los AngelesProf. Marvin Zuckerman will discuss the classic Yiddish author/philosopher Y. L. Perets (Peretz) on Sunday, Feb. 26, 10:15 AM, in this month's session of the seminar series, "Changing The World: Our Legacy in Yiddish Culture," co-sponsored by SoCal Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle) and The Sholem Community. The session will be held at Westside Neighborhood School, 5401 Beethoven Street, Los Angeles. Selected readings from the works of Peretz are now available on the Sholem website, http://www.sholem.org/seminars.html. Those planning to attend the session should certainly download and study the readings. Even those unable to attend will gain significant knowledge by doing so. Gifted poet, master storyteller, profound thinker, Peretz (1852-1915) played a leading role in developing the progressive, secular culture that inspires both sponsoring organizations. Included in the readings are poems that speak for the 99%, an essay that foresaw key events in the 20th century, and a story that pre-dated feminist consciousness. Marvin Zuckerman was Academic Dean for six years and Chair of the English Department at L.A. Valley College, and co-edited the 3-volume anthology, The Three Great Classic Writers of Modern Yiddish Literature. He co-authored Learning Yiddish in Easy Stages and translated Yiddish Sayings Mama Never Taught You. Marvin is a long-time member of the District Committee of the SoCal Arbeter Ring. | Autobiography and Memior with Writer Terry Wolverton |

The theme is: "Autobiography and Memoir." Writer Terry Wolverton is our guest speaker. Her talk will explore: 1) the difference between memoir and autobiography; 2) reasons for writing a memoir (and which of those intersect with readership interest); 3) pitfalls and strategies for success with memoir writing; and 4) the controversy around "truth" in writing about one's life. She will also leave some time for Q&A. Terry has another commitment that day and needs to leave shortly after 2 pm so we will begin ON TIME. Please arrive early and don't miss anything!
Terry Wolverton is the author of nine books, including Insurgent Muse: Life and Art at The Woman's Building, a memoir. She's also edited 14 literary anthologies. She teaches creative nonfiction in the MFA Writing Program at Antioch University LA. She's the founder of Writers At Work, a creative writing center in LA, where she teaches workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
After Terry's talk, we'll proceed to some short (5-minute) presentations by NWU members in this genre. We'll limit the sign-ups to ten people, so contact the chapter chair to get on the list. Members of NWU get preference, then we'll open up the list to AR members and guests.
Admission for Arbeter Ring members is $10 (refunded if you join the union that day). Refreshments will be served.

Love Songs from a Neighboring Village
 YidARTS 2012 continues in February with Love Songs from a Neighboring Village with the generous support of the City of West Hollywood at the West Hollywood Library on February 18th at 7:30 p.m.
Following their acclaimed collaboration, Night Songs from a Neighboring Village, masters of traditional Eastern European music Michael Alpert and Julian Kytasty join forces once more for a musical celebration of love. Alpert and Kytasty bring the intertwined musical traditions of Ashkenaz and Ukraine to West Hollywood. From lyrical love songs and ballads of courting to melodies of marital mayhem and tragic separation, Love Songs from a Neighboring Village shares the intricacies of love as reflected in the musical culture of the Pale of Settlement. SCHUND!, a clever and heartfelt mockumentary, is a kind of Yiddish theatrical Forrest Gump, "introducing" a renowned Yiddish actor who disappeared under criminal circumstances. Left in his wake are debts, rumors, and a mysterious inscription on the door of his home reading "schund." The film's action takes place 25 years after the actor's disappearance as the young filmmaker struggles to pick up his trail.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Yiddish and Hebrew legend Mike Burstyn.

 We will be hosting a book release for Yiddishkeit: Jewish Vernacular and the New Land edited by WC District Committee member Hershl Hartman, along with Harvey Pekar and Paul Buhle. The release event will include a panel with Paul Buhle, and Hershl Hartman, along with several other noted Yiddish scholars. The event will feature 32 illustrations from the book which will be up for a month in our gallery space. This event is co-sponsered by Yiddishkayt. Every Monday at 2 pm Thanks to your attendance, her Conversational Yiddish group is thriving with world-recognized Yiddish teacher, scholar, translator and raconteuse Hadasa Cytrynowicz. Originally from Lodz, and later a long-time resident of Brazil, Hadasa brings a wealth of experience and stories, songs, proverbs and sayings, poetry and interesting topics for discussion to her group. Each session is an hour and 15 minutes. Admission is by voluntary donation.
