Poetry Plus with Uncle Ruthie Buell
Thursday, February 18 at 7 pm

Our "guest" poet for February is not really a guest. He's our very own Jawanza Dumisani, and we all know him well! But what many do not know is that JD runs a really hot poetry group in Leimert Park called The World Stage. On Thursday, February 18 at 7 pm, we'll hear more about The World Stage and we'll hear more of Jawanza's poetry. The usual delicious refreshments will be served and Ruthie will have an (always optional) fun activity for us, to jump-start the evening. Come and bring a friend.
Shabes by the Book
Once again we invite you to attend our monthly book discussion group which is preceded by a delicious Shabes potluck dinner. We generally meet on the fourth Friday of the month at 6:30 pm.

Friday, February 26 @ 6:30 pm: The River Midnight, by Lilian Nattel. Like the mythical Polish shtetl of Blaszka in which it is set, The River Midnight is boisterous, tangled with secrets, and startlingly generous. Told more as nine interwoven stories, Lilian Nattel's debut novel portrays Jewish village life in the 19th century as both dense and wondrous, something akin to Gabriel García Márquez's Macondo-with similar touches of magical realism.  --Ben Guterson

March 26: He, She and It, by Marge Piercy.

ONE BRIGHT SHINING MOMENT:
The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern

With director Stephen Vittoria

This fascinating film, narrated by Amy Goodman, features George McGovern, Warren Beatty, Gore Vidal, Dick Gregory, Ron Kovic, Gloria Steinem, Gary Hart and many others, and has music by Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Donovan, Robbie Robertson et al. It was written, directed, and produced by Stephen Vittoria, who will be with us for this rare showing. It's about McGovern's often lone, brave stance against the Vietnam War and his 1972 grassroots presidential campaign against Richard Nixon.

A great opportunity to see this important film with the director. Admission is $5 (no one turned away).
