How is BJE Enhancing the Quality of Jewish Education?

BJE Annual Day School & Yeshiva Administrators' Retreat
March 4, 2014
BJE is proud to offer professional development to Jewish educators as a means to enhance the quality of Jewish education in Los Angeles.  The 3rd annual Day School & Yeshiva Administrators' Retreat, 21st Century Learners: Integrating New Literacies Into Curriculum & Assessment, on Wednesday, February 12th, was yet another opportunity for BJE to further this mission.  The retreat featured keynote speaker and facilitator Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs who framed the day of learning by advising attendees that "If you're going to be a lifelong teacher, be a public learner."

Heads of Schools and faculty from 25 schools representing three communities: Los Angeles, Los Gatos and San Diego attended sessions on integrating digital, media and global literacies into teaching and learning and designing a 21st century professional development plan.

Natalina Parker from Emek Hebrew Academy said of the day of learning, "Thank you so much for the opportunity to participate in the retreat!  Heidi Hayes Jacobs was phenomenal and extremely inspiring!  I look forward to sharing Heidi's insights with our staff at our next professional development workshop.

The day also featured an Innovation Showcase from three faculty members representing Temple Israel of Hollywood, Valley Beth Shalom Day School and YULA Girls High School respectively.  The Showcase highlighted how day schools are already creating 21st century learning environments.  The day culminated with a conversation for Heads of Schools with Dr. Jon Mitzmacher, Head of School at Martin J Gottlieb Day School in Jacksonville and Director Designate at the Schechter Day School Network on leading change.

With this retreat, Los Angeles joins several other communities in adapting the edJEWcon model, a program of the Schechter Day School Network.  BJE is grateful for the partnership and financial support for this Retreat from Schechter Day School Network, Yeshiva University School Partnerships, PEJE and the DeLeT Program of Hebrew Union College and from the Luxe Hotel where the retreat was held.
