An Interview with Jay

Jay Barston Jay Barston has almost completed one full season as a tennis professional at Yonkers Tennis Center. Get to know him a little better by reading below!

You were working in finance prior to becoming a tennis professional. What got you started working in tennis? I grew up as a very passionate tennis player, so that aspect was a no-brainer. Then, 15 years ago I started volunteering as a tennis coach for the Special Olympics. I really enjoyed teaching and decided to make a career out of it!

With almost one full season under your belt, what have you enjoyed most about YTC? I have learned so much about 10 and Under Tennis, and I embrace the methods used at YTC, along with their Practice & Play (X2) philosophy. Teaching 10 and Under Tennis here is unlike teaching at any other club. It's been great, and I look forward to what is to come!

How did you get started at YTC? Actually Simon taught my daughter about 15 years ago in Darien, CT. We kept in touch, and now here I am. It's all come full circle.

Non-tennis related, what is the #1 thing on your bucket list? I would have to say going to visit my daughter who lives and works in Singapore!

Other than Singapore, is there anywhere else you'd like to travel? I happen to love London and Paris and would go back to either city any day.

Shell Collection What is something our customers might be surprised to learn about you? I'm a big shell collector and a gardener!

And finally, who is your favorite tennis player? Patrick Rafter He is a thinking man's tennis player, and is a great spokesperson for the sport!

Insight into Our Community Work

The above line comes straight from YTC's mission statement. As a new addition to our e-newsletter, each month we will feature a local not-for-profit which YTC supports.

As most of you know, we are supportive of our customers' volunteer activities. It's what makes our community function and is our way of giving back. Please visit our Community page to learn more.

In June we will feature Groundwork Hudson Valley, an organization for which I serve on the board.
