The Mark Minute
Mark Escamilla, Ph.D., President

As the Spring semester draws to a close, I'd like to wish our students good luck on their final exams and congratulations to our prospective Spring graduates. As always, I'm proud of our graduates for their hard work and wish them a future filled with accomplishment and discovery.

As we celebrate Buccaneer Days, I am immensely pleased to report the Buc Days Jimmy Adair Memorial Welding Scholarship with funds given to Del Mar College in memory of Jimmy Adair, founder of the Tennessee Pipeline Construction Company. Mr. Adair sadly lost his fight with cancer and MDS this year. We are deeply grateful to the Buccaneer Commission for this gift and proud to be associated with Jimmy's legacy of generosity.

I am humbled by another example of overwhelming generosity from a dear friend and colleague. We recently acknowledged $400,000 in scholarships given to the College from the estate of Professor Emeritus of English Mike Anzaldúa, who passed away last December. This gift is a capstone to a life committed to teaching and learning. Mike's selfless forethought will go on to change the lives of students for many years to come. I can't think of a better way to remember a man who was a friend and mentor to generations of Del Mar College students, alumni, faculty and staff. Thanks, Mike. We miss you.

You can read about these gifts and much more in this edition of
What's New, What's Next. Have a great Summer!

Anzaldúa Scholarship

Professor Emeritus Mike Anzaldua Tuesday, April 23, was a day of honoring and remembering the late Mike Anzaldúa. Del Mar College recognized the legacy of the Professor Emeritus of English.

Four $90,000 endowed and four $10,000 direct scholarships will benefit the College's English, Music and Mexican-American Studies programs and the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education. All four scholarships cover tuition and fees with the remaining balance for applicable books and supplies that students may need.

Initial distribution of the scholarships will occur during the 2014-2015 academic year through the DMC Foundation. Individuals can make online memorial contributions to the four scholarship funds through the Foundation and Alumni Online Store.

Ayeeeeeee! Calling all Cajuns as well as those who are "Cajun at heart!" The Del Mar College Foundation and Trustee Emeritus Bernie Paulson are bringing back the flavor of the bayou to Corpus Christi. The fifth annual "Bernie's Famous Crawfish Boil" is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, to raise funds for DMC student scholarships.

And, it's famous for a reason!

The all-you-can-eat event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at Concrete Street Old Market Pavilion, 717 Power Street, and promises to be one "hot sauce" of a good time. The event will also feature a silent auction and the DMC Transportation Training Program's truck driving simulators.

Clean Sweep

Being a "good neighbor" means improving the community's surroundings.

The Del Mar College Board of Regents, College officials, guests and representatives from the Broadmoor Neighborhood initiated the demolition of the old osteopathic hospital located at 1502 Tarlton Street during a "Clean Sweep" ceremony on April 3.

Del Mar College is in the process of clearing that lot to enhance neighborhood security and the well-being of area residents, the Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the Primera Iglesia Bautista and the city's Broadmoor Senior Center, among other facilities in the Broadmoor Neighborhood.
