The Mark Minute
 | | Mark Escamilla, Ph.D., President |
This new year, we celebrate initiatives, collaborations and projects that further position Del Mar College as a player on a global stage with a local impact. I recently returned from a trip to China as a guest of TPCO America. DMC will be working to serve TPCO training needs for a new steel mill to open in Gregory. KIII TV's Joe Gazin joined us on the trip and aired news reports during our travels.
Photo gallery Our Double the Dreams fundraising campaign was a rousing success, thanks to the immense generosity and support of Gene Bouligny. He challenged DMC to raise $2.65 million by the end of year, with a promise of another $2 million if we succeeded. With the help of our friends, from major donors like the Type A Board to many people who gave thousands, hundreds, or even just a few dollars each, I'm happy to say we met Gene's challenge, resulting in $4.65 million for student scholarships and equipment! Happy New Year, indeed.
Even as we grow and change, we pause to mourn the passing of Mike Anzaldúa, Professor Emeritus of English. Mike was a dear friend, mentor and exceptional teacher, who served the College with decades of knowledge, humor, clear thought and wisdom delivered in his unique, inspirational way. We miss his dedication, his service and his ready smile, and generations of successful Del Mar College students are his legacy.

Challenge Met!
| |
Last year, Del Mar College, the Del Mar College Foundation and Eugene Bouligny announced his second and largest fundraising challenge. The College and Foundation had to raise $2.65 million by Dec. 31, 2012, to receive a $2 million gift from the philanthropist.
The College and Foundation did it! Combined, a total of $4.65 million will go toward student instructional programs, equipment and scholarships.
During 2012, the Foundation received over 3,318 gifts from 945 donors with donations ranging from $5 to $750,000. Next to Bouligny's $2 million gift, the second largest donation came from the City of Corpus Christi Business and Job Development Corporation (Type A Board), which funded the purchase of six training simulators and two trailers for the College's Transportation Training Program.

China Tour

Dr. Escamilla with J.J. Johnston, Director of Administration, TPCO America
|
This month, I toured TPCO America's facilities in Tianjin, China.
The South Texas delegation also included DMC's Lenora Keas, Executive Director of Strategic Planning/ Assessment and Workforce Initiatives, Craft Training Center President Dr. Anne Matula and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Vice President Dr. Luis Cifuentes, KIII-TV news anchor Joe Gazin, and J.J. Johnston, Director of Administration for TPCO America (pictured with me above).
"The trip to Tianjin and Beijing, China, provided the opportunity for us to see firsthand the type of steel mill that TPCO America Corporation is presently building in Gregory," said Keas. "We were able to tour the mill and meet with the managers to discuss the training that the College will be providing to the local workforce. This steel mill will provide new jobs to the local community in an industry that does not exist in South Texas. This was a personal and professional trip of a lifetime."
TPCO America's steel mill is expected to open in 2014 near Gregory with the need for 600 to 800 well-trained workers. The tour included discussions of the most efficient means of recruiting and training personnel and taking advantage of the Coastal Bend's existing colleges and training centers.

Farewell to a Friend
| |
With considerable sorrow, I share the news that Mike Anzaldúa, Professor Emeritus for the College, died Friday, December 21, 2012, ending 43 years of teaching English composition and literature to thousands of our students. With the wisdom and grace of an elder statesman, Professor Anzaldúa earned the esteem of College faculty and administrators who selected him for the two highest honors Del Mar College awards for academic performance, the Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence and the emeritus title.

"Several decades ago, I gave up caring about external accolades. This one matters to me because it's given by my peers, and it's given for something that has turned out to be my life's passion," noted Dr. Craig on being selected, jokingly adding, "We all sit out there every year imagining ourselves up here, so it's kind of like our Academy Awards. So, I'd like to thank the Academy!" |

Finley Theatre Dedicated
| |
November 9 was a big night for Del Mar Drama when the program opened the long-awaited Sue Sellors Finley Theatre to the public, raising the curtain on the classic musical comedy, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.
 | | "DMC Upside": Finley Theatre Opening |
"This production has turned into a great celebration as we perform a show in a new space named in Sue's honor and featuring a musical she once successfully produced herself," says Kim Frederick, DMC drama professor. "For many of us, this production provides a direct connection to Sue."
