Spotlight on Math
Mrs. Baronofsky's math class recently finished its work on data management, with a focus on making line plots and determining the effect of outliers on measures of central tendency.
Students discussed how the mean and median can differ substantially depending on the distribution of the data, and made their own data displays for the Middle School hallway. Mode as a measure of central tendency was discussed in relation to MLB stolen-base data, and the class discovered that a plurality of students in the class are the eldest in their family. Also of note was the class' finding that most students have about 2 siblings.
Mrs. Baronofsky was thrilled to discover that mean height in the class is about 59 inches. "I'm never above average in height," she jokes. "By 7th grade, they'll be taller than me."
Check out their line plots near L-8 when you drop by the school for Parent-Teacher Conferences!
