Tetzaveh / Zachor

The end of Parshat Tetzave talks about the korban tamid, the two daily offerings on the mizbeach, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some connect these offerings to two psukim in Tanach:

shiviti Hashem lenegdi tamid- I have set Hashem always before me (Tehillim 16:8)

and

vetov lev mishteh tamid - He with a good heart always feasts (Mishlei 15:15)

The first pasuk uses the word tamid to impress upon us the importance of constant awareness that we stand every moment before our creator. The second emphasizes the importance of living a joyful life. The Rama on Orach Chaim -- the section of the shulchan aruch which tells us the laws of how to live our daily lives -- bookends his commentary with these two psukim. We have to learn to live lives dictated by these two seemingly opposite models. One of constant awareness, consistent sober contemplative devotion to our Creator, and one of happiness in His service.

This balance is one that we try to maintain throughout our lives, and is especially relevant as we navigate our way through Taanit Esther and simchas Purim -- being both serious and joyful in our service to Hashem. A balance that David Hamelech emphasizes in Psalms - ivdu et Hashem besimcha on the one hand, and ivdu et Hashem beyira on the other. To worship Hashem with both joy and awe.

Mock trial team success
Congratulations to the Mock Trial Team on their victories this past week against Boston Latin and Boston College High Schools. They finished a perfect preliminary round and are awaiting details about their next move -- whether it be a tie-breaking trial or a direct bid to the state tournament.

Business Club visits Metro Credit Union
by Ari Ronner '16

The Maimonides Business Club was invited by Robert Cashman, President and CEO of Metro Credit Union who spoke here in the fall, to come in person to visit their main offices. There they met not only with him, but also with other executives and senior management teams and got a first hand,  in action,  look at the inner workings of a bank. They also learned more about the complexities of the banking industry, and the steps taken (both educationally and experientially) to pursue this type of a career.

Week of Learning Sponsors
Thank you to Amy and David Strachman for sponsoring this past week of learning in memory of William Luksenburg z"l, Amy's father and the grandfather of two Maimonides alumni, Yair '12 and Ben '14 Strachman. Mr. Luksenburg was a Holocaust survivor. His concentration camp jacket is on display at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, where his oral history is recorded.
