"Sustainable farms are to today's headlong rush toward global destruction what the monasteries were to the Dark Ages: places to preserve human skills and crafts until some semblance of common sense and common purpose returns to the public's mind.

Dear Friends,

It happens every year. January is one of our busiest months preparing for the explosion of growth that's coming.  Weeding, tilling, planting, ordering seeds are a few of the preparatory chores we do.  And it's usually quite sedate with the holidays behind us and a more normal routine.

Until..the trained ear turns to find out the source of some animal squabbling on, for the most part, our tranquil farm.  Experience tells me right away what's going on...the hormones in our duck flock are kicking in and there's rivalry between the two drakes and the reluctant girls are not interested yet.  It's the sure signal that spring is officially right around the corner!  They'll work it out.  They always do and peace returns.

Shall we address a secret shame we've all experienced in the kitchen?  There are spells of time in everyone's life where outside forces and circumstances don't allow the usual time for food preparation.  It's just happened to us with family issues.  Sunday evening I was looking forward to a nice home cooked meal and in opening my vegetable bins in the refrigerator found the dreaded, not properly put away produce from the prior week's delivery items.  Fennel, celery, tomatoes, green onions, half an onion, radishes, carrots, turnips, potatoes, lettuce, etc. So I took everything out, put on a pot of water to simmer and started rinsing and chopping.  Before long there was a delicious vegetable soup filling the kitchen with enticing smells.  It was so good and I thought of you members and how we share the food from our good earth.  It was most nourishing.

We now have a 'tab' on www.seabreezeorganicfarm.org to purchase a delivery going directly to local military families.   Letting your friends and associates know of this program will be appreciated as well.

May you enjoy and utilize all your items for this week.  If you need suggestions for use or recipes on any of your items, feel free to email me and I'll help.
