A vegetable garden in the beginning looks so promising and then after all little by little it grows nothing but vegetables, nothing, nothing but vegetables.
- Gertrude Stein
Dear Friends,
Thank you shareholders for the kind notes this past week. Here is one of my favorites:
"I've been receiving your delivery every week for 3 years now and it's funny; I'm just now understanding how the changing seasons effect what you send. Last week I received a little bouquet of narcissus and thought 'ah, a bulb flower. Coming straight up from the ground. It must mean fall' as I remember last year enjoying their sweet fragrance so much. Thank you for helping us connect to our Earth through our food."
Let's talk chickens now. For us, within a short time of summer equinox, the internal clock of the chickens know minute by minute that the days are getting shorter. It's not a good idea to have baby chicks when winter approaches as food and warmth are harder to find, so they gradually stop producing eggs until early spring. And for Seabreeze chickens, most of the gals are quite old now and they're not producing any at all. So for those of you that order our eggs, we need to switch you to our alternate producer, Chino Farms. They're the best we've found: organic, range free, no GMO's..in other words the 'right' kind. Since chickens are their only focus, they routinely replenish them and are able to stay in egg production. Thought you needed to know.
On our food. Hope you enjoy the range of nutrients for the week. Turnips and their greens might be a little different for you but turnip greens are one of those 'off the charts good for you' things, along with the red mustard or rapini you might receive. Here's a link to why:
This quick and easy recipe can apply to all 'greens' for those of you not from the South used to having them every day!
