When the world wearies and society fails to satisfy,
There is always the garden.
 by Minnie Aumonier

  Dear Friends,

Miracles do happen!  We're still experiencing the thrill and gratefulness of the surprise rain from yesterday.  Caught unawares, it was pretty funny racing around the farm collecting anything that would hold water to catch the bounty from above.  All the tall trees and bushes that with the new 'normal' of withholding irrigation, shimmered with relief of being washed off and a drink of water.  The field crops soaked up every drop.

I've had many people tell me they assumed we had special pricing and allotment of water to grow our crops.  NOT SO.  We pay as much water to grow as anyone else in the City of San Diego. So our use of water is high priority around here for scrimping.  Bath water, kitchen water, washing machine water and water for washing the vegetables is all reused (by schlepping ) to non-produce areas or to the animals.  Gives a whole new understanding of what pioneers went through to survive.

San Diegans, local farms are vital.  We are the only centrally located family farm left in the City of San Diego, privately operated, not relying on government subsidies or grants.  We need your financial support.  If joining us through our Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSA) program doesn't fit your busy life, please consider signing up for one for a military or low income family that will gratefully use.  Weekly, every other week, monthly.  What ever you can. There are a lot of human, animal and wildlife lives that depend on our continuation.  Please be generous.  We can not keep going without your help.

Cucumbers are wonderful in the summer.  Here are two of my favorite simple ways to use besides salads.

LIMITED TIME OFFER! Fresh line caught Salmon is in the Green Store nowGet some of the highest quality Salmon brought in from Alaska for you. Line caught using traditional sustainable methods is the very best available. This method has minimal environmental impact and as wild fish is hook and line caught, this ensures the fish is in tip top condition before being packed in ice.

Please note that some substitutions may apply from time to time.  We'll let you know if anything needs to be subbed out..We are subject to what grows and what's there to share...
