"To own a bit of ground, to scratch it with a hoe, to plant seeds and watch their renewal of life - this is the commonest delight of the race, the most satisfactory thing a man can do."...Charles Dudley Warner, author, editor, publisher (1829 - 1900)

Dear Friends,

A little rain for most is an inconvenience.  Forecast for 'rain' for me means digging through my flower seed packets and finding nooks and crannies for just a 'few' more flowers.  Last evening, just before sunset, I was hurriedly finding spots with my trusty hoe that aren't already filled and sprinkling in blue and red flax, lineria, Johnny Jump-ups, calendulas, coreopsis and others.  There's something about a gardeners mind's eye that doesn't see seeds..we see flowers!  Hope you'll come in the spring to see the beauty.

The three baby ducks are all grown up now and integrated into the remaining group.  Although all related, they have distinctive white markings so we know who's who.  It's been quite amusing following them becoming attached to their elders.  They'd want to follow but would hold back and talk about it before waddling off, sometimes deciding yes and sometimes no.  Either choice produces much talking about it!    Gardening with ducks is a real challenge.  They love to filter soil through their beaks when they find a wet spot..hopefully it's not where something was just planted or seeded.  They also have their way of settling in for naps in leaves and under bushes and able to follow your steps if you inadvertently walk by them too closely.  They'll look at you with one eye still keeping their beaks tucked under a wing and not move a muscle..unless you get too close.  Hey, we're napping! Ducks rule here.

We had a lovely group of folks here Saturday for the Frizzle class.  Several toddlers were a joy to watch being free and experiencing the sights and smells.  I think they went home tired, happy and with just a little Seabreeze dirt under their nails.

If you need an idea for your nutritious Swiss Chard, try sauteing in a little coconut oil until tender and then toss with hot cooked pasta and maybe a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese and nuts like walnuts, pistachios or sunflower seeds.  Serve with a salad brimming with goodies, chunky wholesome bread and good olive oil (over pasta too) and you've a quick easy tasty meal in no time at all.
