I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made: Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. -William Butler Yeats, The Lake Isle of Innisfree Items for this week for all sizes click here: What's in my bag
Dear Friends,
I confess I don't understand this Facebook thing at all. Thousands of friends? Let me tell you about mine. First, I am very careful, after learning the lessons the hard way, who and what I invite to my farm. I'm referring to plants and animals, although I could tell stories about people too. Seems most invites are perfectly happy to settle in, thrive and grow. One of these is called Zebrina. A lovely plant and flower, member of the mallow family with scores of purple and lavender flowers up their tall and sturdy stalks. They've taken hold all along the west side of our little farm house, right outside the big screened kitchen window. If these weren't nice enough of themselves, they invite hundreds of their friends, the bees.
Now, there are serious issues with our world bee populations. Seabreeze was interviewed by a major network a few weeks ago and the interviewer was a little disappointed that I didn't have a doom and gloom attitude (I think perhaps she didn't even go outside for her reporting). I explained how at least for us, our diversity, lack of chemical use and proximity to open spaces gave the bees plenty of food in a safe environment and flourished.
And happy they are here, sharing their wealth of food sources with scores of hummingbirds. What hard workers they all are. From early in the morning until the sun sets, they load themselves up with pollen and nectar on French lavender, buddelia, Zebrinas and many more of other flowers. The air outside my kitchen sink when cooking dinner is thick with their industrious little bodies. These are my friends Think of them when you smell your French lavender this week and know that your financial support is what makes their happy lives possible.
