The best way to garden is to put on a wide brimmed straw hat and some old clothes. And with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell somebody else where to dig.

Dear Friends,
Every once in while I get an email from a shareholder upset about a slug or baby snail in their lettuce. Now, those of you that know me, know I'm passionate about growing good food for people however clerking and customer relations are not my strong suits. Usually I explain that there are scores of birds, insects and various critters that want to eat our food before I can get their product to them or that it's better to see you enemy than not as with chemicals. Occasionally we'll miss one or two when rinsing from the fields. But there is really no way I can truly get them to understand what a day and night battle it is to protect our crops.
So we (like that 'we'? Actually it's my husband Kendall) sets out Have A Heart traps especially for the raccoons and skunks. But a couple of weeks ago, Andres, our foreman, set out the trap baited with dog food and didn't tell us. Normally, that would be fine, but on this particular night, as I was happily preparing dinner, Kendall was in the garage fixing something or another, and the Corgi's were under my feet hoping for something to drop to the floor. I scooted them out thinking they'd go see Kendall. About a half an hour later, he comes back in with Sammy, our tri- color, and no (Queen) Edwina, our plump and happy yellow one. 'Where's Edwina?' 'I don't know. Thought she was with you'. So the next hour, called and called and searched the grounds with flash lights, even calling Collete, the leader of the Corgi Meetups, who wonderfully showed up with mega lights and we continued to search. By this time, I'm hysterical, thinking of families that have suffered with child kidnapping and am about to call the Coast Guard when Kendall whistled and there at my feet was Edwina. Yes, you're right, she had waddled off in the night with the whiff of a snack in the air, had the trap door close on her and had just set there thinking how stupid we all were not to have seen the trap wedged between the delivery vans! Here's a short video on a Corgi meetup here and you can probably guess which one is Edwina. She's actually lost weight since the filming but is still a Foodie:
