The Hopes and Fears of All the Years
I do not want to be a bad mother. I don't want to raise cynical kids. I want to come at parenting with faith and hope. I want to have a happy and healthy marriage, and I want to have happy, faithful kids. But I reject the pervasive cultural lie that a happy marriage and the faithful kids are somehow the byproducts of some rigorous and largely unattainable personal or moral perfection.
Lies have power only if no one is willing to tell the truth. The Bible reminds us that the truth can set us free. But I can count on one hand the women and men I know who, in the first days and weeks of parenthood, when they were bewildered and tired and afraid, turned to the Bible or got down on their knees to pray for guidance. It doesn't really occur to many of us. It didn't occur to me, and I'm a pastor.

Have Any Extra Wheels? Crisis Ministries Needs Bicycles Crisis Ministries is looking for some gently used bicycles, both men's and women's, to provide to residents who are working and or interviewing for a job and need transportation. Now may be a good time to clean that garage and get rid of any no longer used bikes! They are also in need of helmets and locks. If you have any bikes you would like to donate (or helmets and locks) please contact Steve Bailey (881-8472 or stevenbaileyco@aol.com) and he will make arrangements to pick up. |

PDA Continues Providing Help
and Hope in the Wake of Sandy
PDA (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance) has continued providing help and hope for the survivors of Hurricane Sandy over the past couple of weeks. Twenty-seven members of the National Response Team are working with mid-councils in New York and New Jersey helping them organize their response, assisting in the assessment of damages (both in the community and to Presbyterian churches), assessing potential sites to host volunteer work teams, and providing spiritual and emotional care for Presbyterian leaders.
Visit the PDA website for more information on Sandy and other areas that PDA is currently responding.

Attention Worship Planners: To Carol or to Hymn? ... That is the question with which many worship planners wrestle at Advent.
What will your congregation sing this Advent? This season you can lead your congregation in singing newly composed lectionary-based hymn lyrics set to familiar Christmas carol tunes. The lyrics are written by renowned hymn-writer Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. For example:- On the 1st Sunday: "The days are Coming, Said the Lord"
- to the tune of "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear"
- On the 2nd Sunday: "Behold, Said God, I'm Sending One"
- to the tune of "While Shepherd Watched their Flocks by Night"
- On the 3rd Sunday: "Sing Out, All God's People"
- to the tune of "Adeste Fideles"
You can purchase and download a print master with full musical manuscript (like appears in a hymnal) in two sizes (regular and large print) for just $9.95 per Sunday. Or, purchase the complete set -- including Christmas (10 hymns in all*) -- for just $35.00.
After you download the master you can print as many copies as needed for your worship services. Each week's purchase includes a second bonus hymn-carol from a previous year that also fits the Year C Scripture texts for that day. Download the hymn-carols that will have your congregation engaging the Advent message in the Christmas spirit all season long! |
