A Letter from Rachel Epps CAP Youth Ministry Associate
Dear Colleagues in Ministry,
I wanted to give you all a heads up as you are probably in the midst of planning your budget for the coming year. We try very hard to keep the cost of our Presbytery Youth Retreats down to a reasonable price so that everyone in our Presbytery has the opportunity to participate. Due to rising costs on our end, we are going to have to raise the price of our retreats next year to keep up. In the past, we have tried to keep retreat fees at around $70. This has not covered a youth's full cost for the weekend, nor does it include fees for our leadership or supplies. As you are preparing your budget, please plan on a retreat fee of $80 per youth. We will continue to do everything we can to keep costs down so we can continue to keep it reasonable.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Peace, Rae Epps, raeepps@gmail.com |

Presbytery Resource Center: Check Out These Advent Resources
When God Comes Down: An Advent Study for Adults by James Harnish This is a five-week study, providing one lesson for each week of Advent and one for Christmas. Each lesson includes a key Scripture, a brief reflection, discussion/reflection questions, a brief prayer, and a focus for the coming week. In this study, Harnish explores the meaning of the incarnation. God with us in human flesh. Often our Advent/Christmas journey is focused on us - our memories, feelings, relationships and experiences. This study puts the focus on God's action in Jesus Christ. It encourages participants to think more deeply in terms of the biblical, theological, and spiritual meaning of the Nativity and to apply it to their own life experiences. The study looks at the stories of the primary biblical characters in the birth stories through whose lives the miracle of incarnation happened: Zechariah, Elizabeth, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. Harnish also looks at a traditional character in nativity plays, one who is not mentioned in the Bible, the innkeeper. Through all these characters, he helps us claim for ourselves the reality of God's presence with us. If used in a group study, each participant needs their own copy.
Christmas Shoppe: An Advent Experience for Children by Daphna Flegal and Marcia Stoner At this event for children of all ages, the Christmas story will be heard and Christmas symbols/ornaments will be created and sold to support a mission project of the church's choice. This Advent experience also includes liturgy for a worship service for the entire congregation. The Christmas Shoppe is experienced through six departments: Angel, Manger, Candy, Star, Card, and Bakery. A CD-ROM is included that provides music, PowerPoints, and scripts.
Preparing the Way: An Advent Study Based on
the Revised Common Lectionary by Nan Duerling and Sue Mink This study offers the opportunity and challenge to journey toward Bethlehem and the manger by exploring the Revised Common Lectionary readings designated for this Advent season. As she guides us through the lectionary texts of Advent 2012 in Preparing the Way, Sue Mink inspires us to claim for ourselves the call to prepare our hearts, our minds, and our lives for the coming of Jesus Christ in his birth and in his second coming. The Leader Guide, written by Nan Duerling, is combined with the Student Book allowing more flexibility for leading the study. The Leader Guide gives help to leaders for Sunday School Classes or other small groups by providing the same great materials you've come to know and depend on when preparing to lead your class or group.

Union Presbyterian Seminary
Congregational Leadership Awards:
Is Your Congregation Doing Innovative Ministry?
From 1980 until 1990, under the leadership of the Rev. Aubrey Brown, the second editor of the Presbyterian Outlook, four annual awards were presented to Richmond-area Presbyterian congregations for excellence in Christian education and outreach. In 1991 the Presbyterian School of Christian Education began to administer these awards, which became open to all congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Since then 93 churches in 28 states have received awards. The number of awards was expanded to five in 2006 with the addition of an award for ministries with the developmentally disabled and in 2010 three older adult education ministry awards were added. Each of the awards carries a $1,000 prize to support the congregation in its ministry.
For information and/or to apply for one of the Union Presbyterian Seminary Congregational Leadership Awards, you may download the brochure and application or request an application by sending an e-mail to April Swofford at aswofford@upsem.edu or call 1-800-229-2990, ext 231. The application and instructions are only available electronically.
The deadline for the 2013 Awards is February 15, 2013.
