SKYDIVE SNOHOMISH NEWS
Jim Sutton
Director Customer Service |
What a beautiful summer season we have had! And throughout the entire season, we have enjoyed wonderful support from the Harvey Airfield aviation community! With the support of the community, Skydive Snohomish has been able to bring over 27,000 people to Harvey Field and the surrounding area for skydiving related activities so far this year. This infusion of activity, excitement and economic value has enabled us to contribute greatly to the overall health and viability of our gem of an airport that many of us call our "second home". The media coverage of skydiving at Harvey Field also helped show the public the value of a general aviation airport.
As the season comes to a close, we just wanted to offer a BIG THANK YOU to all the Harvey Airfield users for making special accommodations for the Skydive Snohomish Caravan and 182 in the pattern. Also, we can't forget the support we receive from Harvey Field for the airport maintenance and improvements, and Snohomish Flying Service for keeping our aircraft in great shape! Thank you all for your support, and we look forward to next season and beyond!
Blue Skies!
PS: Skydive Snohomish will maintain office hours 7 days a week October through December. Skydiving operations will continue on Fri-Sun during October, however, skydive operations will cease for the winter during November and December. We'll be ready to start again in January!

Monkey Skills
Being a capable pilot is about much more than just having the ability to control and maneuver an aircraft. Flying a helicopter requires a fair amount of control coordination, aka "monkey skills". But there is a strong difference between being a "good stick" and a "great aviator". Numerous pieces of information are necessary for safety and decision making - both on the ground and during flight. Prior to even turning the rotor, laying the proper ground work is critical in setting up a successful flight. This isn't new information, of course. Anyone working in or around helicopters can attest: there are many critical steps and a good bit of preparation time put towards each hour of flight.
Ground training is necessary for good flight training. It is difficult - not to mention, unwise - to build upon a shaky foundation of knowledge. As a student, having solid ground knowledge prior to getting the rotors turning can equal less cost, stress, and frustration during training. It is essential to have a handle on ground concepts in order to progress.
Keeping sharp requires discipline. And it's necessary for more than just passing a checkride. As a pilot, having the right information at the proper time during flight can save your life. As we continue refining our "monkey skills", we would all do well to pursue a proactive approach to continuous learning and review, throughout our piloting careers.

AIRIAL BALLOON COMPANY NEWS

Administrative Assistant

This has been a great flying season for Airial Balloon Company, and the weather continues to be gorgeous! This year we've been fortunate to have flown people from all over the world and have had the privilege to have been a part of many engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and birthday parties, and we've helped a few terminally ill people fulfill their wishes. From the complements, we know that flying has made their day and lifted their spirits. We'll continue to float through the valley through the fall and winter as weather permits.
Upcoming winter and spring events include "Redmond Lights" and our fun-filled Winthrop Weekend. Redmond Lights, presented by the City of Redmond and held on December 6th, is an annual event to kick-off the holiday season and promote local shopping. Part of the festivities include an evening balloon glow where passers-by are invited to see hot air balloons up close, speak with the pilots and, in some cases, have their photographs taken while in a balloon gondola. Winthrop Weekend, March 5-8, 2015, is a combination balloon rally and weekend getaway including a two-night stay at Sun Mountain Lodge and a hot air balloon flight over the snow-covered Methow valley. Optional activities include a Friday night dinner-sleigh ride, a Saturday night balloon glow, snowmobiling, ice-skating, cross-country skiing, fine dining, and spa treatments. Check our website or Facebook page for photographs of past Winthrop Weekends.
As weather permits, we look forward to seeing you over the winter months!
