EAA CHAPTER 84 EVENT AT HARVEY FIELD

On August 16th EAA Chapter 84 based at Harvey Field will kick off a great event at their Hangar in Bldg 12 at the north end of the airport.  Starting at 9:00 am the Chapter 84 members will be providing Young Eagle flights for about 15 kids that are part of the Red-Tail Hawks Association.  The Red-Tail Hawks are associated with the Tuskegee Airman and the Black Pilots of America Association.  Their mission is to promote aviation to kids in the African American community.  EAA expects about 4 to 5 planes giving rides until around noon. The EAA pilots participating are familiar with the airport, and the pilot briefing will review the skydiver drop zones and the departure and approach procedures for the airport.

If you have a chance during this event, I encourage you to drop by the hangar and meet President Dave and his Chapter 84 team of aviators based right here at Harvey Field.  I have had the pleasure of working with Chapter 84 members on many projects and events at Harvey Field.  Chapter 84 truly is represented by an enthusiastic group of pilots that volunteer many hours of precious time to mentor and encourage young aspiring aviators, take on airport projects, and passionately promote General Aviation and their home airport.  From all of us at Harvey Field, thank you EAA Chapter 84 Members!

SNOHOMISH ~ In the media spotlight!

Travel Channel

Did you know that Snohomish was named by TravelChannel.com as one of the 6 most beautiful places to skydive in the world?  No other location in North America was mentioned!  Snohomish was listed with other locations in New Zealand, Switzerland, Dubai, Australia, and Thailand!  Of course, that distinction would come as no surprise to those who fly in and out of Harvey Field on a regular basis, but it was wonderful to get the recognition that Snohomish County and surrounding areas so rightfully deserve as one of the most beautiful places in the world!  Check out their posting here!

Also, Skydive Snohomish was recently privileged to have Margaret Larson, host of KING5 New Day Northwest, and her producer Heidi Eng, visit and experience the thrill of a first-time skydive!  We really enjoyed the two of them, and especially the video they produced of Margaret's experience!  Check out the New Day Northwest program here!

We appreciate the media attention, and the opportunity to tell others why we feel Snohomish and the surrounding areas are such wonderful places to work, live, and visit!

HANDS-ON Flying Experience

Even if you've flown for years on commercial airlines, you've never really flown unless you've been up in a small aircraft.  While a jet plane is supposed to be no-thrills, a small aircraft really makes you feel like you're flying.  You can feel wind gusts and thermals along the way and the experience is much more exciting.  In most small aircraft, you sit next to the pilot and can ask questions, learn about the controls, and even fly the plane yourself.  It's a hands-on flying experience like you'll never have in an airliner.

To land, a commercial jet needs a long, paved runway.  Small aircraft can land at major airports, but they can also land at much smaller runways and even unpaved grass strips.  If you want to visit a small town without an international airport, you may still be able to do it if they have a small local airport and many do.  Small planes are much more flexible about where they land: from grass strips to fields and even lakes and rivers, if you've got a seaplane.

Small aircraft pilots love what they do.  An enthusiastic pilot will be delighted to talk about the plane, show you the controls, let you fly, and show you what the aircraft can do.  You definitely get more out of the experience when you fly with someone who's passionate about it.  Jet airliners are perfect for taking you from point A to point B.  But if you want an unforgettable flying experience, take a ride on a small airplane.

New Faces at Snohomish Flying

Jack Collins was born and raised in Lake Stevens, Washington. As long as he could remember he wanted to learn to fly for commercial airlines. At the age of 11 he got an introduction flight at Harvey field and has been flying here ever since. Jack attended Harvey Field's summer aviation youth camp which encouraged his passion for aviation. He went on to solo at age 16 and is about to get his private pilot certificate.

Joseph Clark 2014
Joseph Clark joined the Snohomish Flying Service team as a flight instructor in July of 2014. Joseph managed to complete his private and instrument ratings while attending high school before going off to college in Billings Montana. After leaving for college and along the way he completed the remainder of his training for the certificates and ratings required to teach flight training. He first moved to the Seattle area in 2013 when he accepted a flight instructor position in Washington State at Boeing Field. Joseph grew up in Hamilton Montana flying the back country of Western Montana and Idaho and currently serves in the National Guard.

AIRIAL BALLOON COMPANY NEWS

Caitlin Knox
Administrative Assistant

With warmer weather comes crowded beaches, ice cream trucks, and a fun, carefree feeling, right?  Well, that's not necessarily true for balloonists.  Yes, we're excited about sunshine and clear skies, but we could do without excessive heat.  Here's why:  Like other aircraft, balloons have load restrictions.  The fabrics that balloon envelopes are made of also have temperature restrictions which, depending on the manufacturer, range from 250 to 300 degrees F.  Balloons ascend when the temperature inside the envelope significantly exceeds ambient air temperature so, to achieve lift, the temperature inside a balloon envelope must increase as the ambient temperature increases.  However, we must observe fabric limitations and keep the temperature below the "redline."  Once that temperature has been reached, we must lighten our load.  For example, at 70 degrees, the Cameron can carry 1,360 pounds; at 90 degrees, the load drops to 1195.  While some people slim down to get a beach-ready body, we trim our loads to meet aircraft limitations.

New Faces at Airial Balloon

In addition to several returning seasonal employees, we're welcoming Karen Darr, Taylor Navesken, and Ashlyn Woods as the newest additions to the Airial Balloon Company staff.  Karen and Ashlyn check-in passengers and handle things while our passengers are enjoying their flights and Taylor handles grounds maintenance.  Holly graduated from Snohomish High School and now attends Western Washington University in Bellingham. She has returned for her second summer with us. Her position is mainly administrative. Alex Hintz has returned from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, also for his second season of ballooning. Alex works as ground/chase crew during balloon flights. Welcome!
