Harvey Field News

Cynthia Hendrickson
Airport Manager

The management and staff at Harvey Field would like to thank you for your patience this last fall during the extensive airport maintenance projects conducted which included overlay of taxiway alpha, crack seal, seal coating and restriping of Runaway 15L/33R. The project took approximately seven days to complete and the action on the airport was intense. With all of the extra equipment and people roaming around in areas that are usually restricted, we are pleased to note that the project was completed safely and successfully and within the time lines set.  The construction crews, pilots, instructors, Linemen and overall staff and project managers were diligent, alert and aware of their surrounds and we thank everyone for the attentiveness! Look below to see a side by side comparison of the before and after pictures! Thank you WSDOT Aviation...

Snohomish Flying News

Rebekah Duncan

Assistant Chief Helicopter Flight Instructor

Greetings from the Rotor Crew!

Over the past few months, SFS has welcomed several new helicopter students, witnessed first solo flights, and congratulated newly-rated helicopter pilots. We are also excited to report on a few items that have been in the works:

Safety Seminar

March's Wire Strike Safety Seminar was well attended by both SFS locals and others from the aviation community. Garret introduced us to 'The Enemy' (his 2 inch ACSR beast-of-a-cable) and we all walked away equipped with invaluable information about flying safely in the wire environment. Don't miss out on our next safety seminar on Tail Rotor Failures and Malfunctions. Details to come.

External Load/Long-Line Training

This course is directed at the pilot with no vertical reference experience and is designed to give the basic knowledge and skills required to enter into this highly specialized field. In addition, we include extensive ground training on load management, rigging, and congested load operations. Our syllabus is nearly complete and we have a couple of students ready to enroll. Contact Garret for updates and scheduling.

Mountain Flying Course

Mountain flying is a much desired skill set in the helicopter industry and we have such a great training environment right in our backyard! Our course is designed to teach basic flying skills and techniques to pilots unfamiliar with mountain flight operations. Garret & Rebekah have been scouting out locations to use in our SFS Helicopter Mountain Flying Course and are busy finishing up the training program.

Additional Courses

There is a Helicopter Instrument Course, Helicopter CFII Course, and add-on ratings for both being developed.

Stay Tuned

We are proud to be active in our community through education and awareness concerning the helicopter industry through mentorship and participation in local community events. The SFS Rotor Crew is looking forward to another great year of flying as we continue to help equip future aviation professionals as they pursue their flying goals.

Bird is the word!

Spring is finally here and we in the line and maintenance facility at Snohomish Flying are certainly enjoying the longer days. With the return of the longer daylight hours, we also experience the return of more birds to the airport this time of year. Bird is the word, so don't forget those bird blocks!

Our shop has been keeping busy throughout the winter maintaining our fleet of aircraft, and performing annual inspections and repairs for our customers. Be sure to call and schedule your annual inspection early as the schedule fills up quickly. In addition to inspection and repair services, we also offer VFR & IFR transponder checks and dynamic propeller balancing. Our parts department can provide you with lubricants, oil, filters, sparkplugs, hardware and many other parts for your aircraft.

While you are getting your aircraft ready for its first spring flight, let Snohomish Flying help you by getting it washed and detailed by our friendly line staff. We can apply a coat of wax and even shampoo your carpets. Our line staff stands ready to assist you with tugs, jump starts and your fueling needs. Call ahead and we can even fuel your aircraft before you arrive!

Take advantage of the warmer days to awaken your aircraft for spring and keep in mind that it's a great time to keep an eye out for leaks, corroded areas, and mechanical issues. It's also a good time to check your aircraft's lubrication points, battery and tire pressure. If you need a little air we have a hose located on the north side of our gas shack. A little extra care in the springtime goes a long way to ensure a safe and enjoyable flying season for the warm months ahead.

Caravan 208B Blackhawk Skydive Snohomish News

Jim Sutton
Director of Customer Service

Skydive Snohomish, Washington's #1 voted skydiving center, is pleased to announce the installation of a new Blackhawk turbine engine in their Cessna 208 Grand Caravan skydiving plane. The new engine produces 850 horsepower, an increase of approximately 26% over the stock engine, and results in climbs to the 13,000 foot exit altitude at 1,500 feet per minute.

According to Blackhawk, the Grand Caravan's impressive record includes more than 12.5 million flight hours, with operational certifications in about 100 nations, completing such diverse missions as skydiving drops, amphibious transport and medical evacuation, air surveillance and regional airline, business and corporate flights on every continent except Antarctica.

With the new engine, Skydive Snohomish will be able to share their passion for the sport with even more people wanting to experience the thrill of a skydive. Annually, thousands of people come for a first-time skydive over the Snohomish Valley, bringing many friends with them to watch the fun and excitement. With friends and family supporting the first-time skydivers, it is not uncommon for 500 people per day to visit Skydive Snohomish on weekend days during the summer season. A large portion of those people are from out of the Snohomish area, and spend the rest of their day in downtown Snohomish and surrounding Snohomish County areas.

Skydive Snohomish owner and operator Tyson Harvey stated, "We have been very fortunate to have the support of the Snohomish and surrounding business community and public. We provide over 50 seasonal jobs that help support the local economy, and bring in thousands of visitors who might not otherwise have had a reason to come to Snohomish. With the new engine, we hope to offer even more people an introduction into the amazing world of skydiving. Once people have taken the life-affirming jump out of a perfectly good airplane, they have a different perspective on facing and overcoming life's fears and obstacles."

Skydive Snohomish is a family owned and operated skydive center located on Harvey Field, in Snohomish, Washington. For more information about skydiving, please see our website at www.SkydiveSnohomish.com.

Airial Balloon Co Airial Balloon Company News

Shannan Sorensen
General Manager

Hello aviation enthusiasts! As this is the first newsletter we've contributed to, let us introduce ourselves - we are Airial Balloon Company and we're located across the street from Harvey Field. We've been part of the diverse aeronautic community in Snohomish since 1981 and are owned and operated by Marilyn Harvey, whose father and grandfather, Eldon and Noble Harvey respectively, founded Harvey Field. Marilyn's been around aircraft her entire life, and spent many years working in the airport office and restaurant.

Airial Balloon Company offers flights just after sunrise and just before sunset every day, weather permitting. We often use Harvey Field as a launch or landing site. Our passengers truly enjoy viewing the variety of aircraft on the field, and love the aerial views of skydivers jumping and airplanes landing.

Winter rains and winds often keep us on the ground this time of year so, back in the 90's, we began traveling to Winthrop each March for some much-needed flying. This annual trek has since become a three-day balloon festival taking place over the first full weekend in March. Our 2015 excursion is scheduled for March 5-8. Please check our website, www.airialballoon.com, or call us at (360) 568-3025 if you'd like more information about Winthrop Weekend.

Want to win a balloon flight? Enter our raffle for a chance to win! Tickets are only $1.

In other news, we are gearing up to be a part of the 2014 Snohomish Easter Parade on April 19. If you've attended the parade during the past three years you wouldn't have missed the loud "whooshing" of our burners. As always, this year should be a BLAST! We hope to see you there, and we look forward to seeing you on the field!
