Keeping Pace
Patrick Dempsey, the driving force between The Art of Racing in the Rain's film adaptation, spoke to the New York Times about his career and racing plans.

Before his visit to All Sammamish Reads, Garth answered a few questions for blogger
Muddy Kinzer. Muddy also posted a recap of Garth's All Sammamish Reads visit, made more difficult for her by bringing her young son (carried out with bribes).

Audis, Track Days, and Garth
Garth returned to his car club roots when he paid a visit to Quattrofest in November. Hosted by the Audi Club Northwest, Quattrofest brought Audi and performance drivers together for a full weekend at the Portland International Raceway. Activities included driver education classes, autocross, instructed lapping time, a fundraising auction, and Garth's appearance at the evening banquet. Huge fun!

The Art of Following Your Heart
In October, Garth visited St. Catherine's School, an all-girls school in Richmond, VA. The Art of Racing in the Rain was chosen as the school's All-Upper-School summer reading selection. Garth read passages to the entire school at an assembly, attended an English class, and spoke with the school's young writers over lunch. He also shared a few words of advice with students, who were looking forward to college and independence.
"You have a lot of decisions that demand your attention, for every day and for your future. There's a lot of pressure for you to make the right decision. Only one person has the right answer - you. Those decisions need to be made by your heart. At some point no one will be pushing you. You must take full responsibilities for the decisions in your life." That's advice none of us have to be students in order to follow!

On The Road
| Photo by Lillian O'Rourke | Traveling kept Garth busy this fall. Two hundred people showed up for All Sammamish Reads' grand finale--a visit with Garth. The Art of Racing in the Rain was this year's selection.
Later, Garth visited the Washington coast for a short research trip, along with several events along the way. First up: the Freedom Tails program at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center. This program rescues shelter dogs from euthanasia then matches them with inmates, who help train and socialize the dogs for adoption. Second chances all around! As of August, more than one hundred and fifty dogs have found new homes and loving families.
After visiting the kennels, where dogs (L-R) Callie, Ginger, Roxy, Bear, and Amos showed off their skills, Garth chatted with the handlers. Although visitor presentations at the corrections center can sometimes be nerve-wracking, Garth's readings from The Art of Racing in the Rain brought both laughter and thought filled contemplation to the group. Says Karen Diehm, a volunteer with Freedom Tails: "By the time he was done, they had been laughing, clapping, and making comments."
Next came Shoalwater Tribal Community Library in Tokeland, WA. The local librarian set up a remarkable spread of refreshments, including raspberry and cream cheese rolls, smoked salmon, egg/tuna salad dip, and more.
November brought a change of pace for Garth. The Vernetta Smith Timberland Library in Chehalis invited Garth to talk about his first novel, Raven Stole the Moon. Garth regaled the audience with Tlingit myths. Garth himself is part Tlingit and drew inspiration from his family's stories for the novel's kushtakas and Alaskan setting.
