Rainy skies in Boca caused a last-minute location change, but that didn't dampen the spirit of our International Day of Peace celebration in Sept. Nearly 150 people joined us inside at Sunflower Creative Arts for peace crafts, music, storytelling and community. Sunny Love, our peace dove puppet, even got a chance to stretch her wings [...]...»

Sunflower Fundamentals Toolbox--This Week!
Learn the basics of our teaching philosophy.

Parent Toolbox: Sunflower Fundamentals
Thursday, Oct. 18, 7:00 - 9:00 pm AND
Friday, Oct. 19, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
$5 each session. Free to Seedlings families.

The first in our series of Toolbox workshops. Our starting point is all about respect and child development. In this class, Susan will share her expertise, participants will discuss real life situations, and everyone will leave with an action plan and tools.

Sunflower Parent Toolbox workshops give parents the tools and confidence to help them on their own unique parenting journeys. Parents learn to trust their instincts, and follow their heads and their hearts in making parenting decisions, while forming a great relationship and understanding of their child.

Class starts THURSDAY! Call 561 482-3412 to register.

Roots & Shoots now meets weekly!
Join us Wednesdays at 3:00 pm (Shooting Stars, ages 5-9) or 5:00 (Re-Cycos, ages 10-16), at Sunflower. No fee.

Want to hold a worm!?
This Wednesday, Oct. 17, Roots & Shoots members will be learning more about vermiculture (composting with worms). Come check out our wriggly squiggly worm friends and find out how they transform kitchen scraps into fertile soil for our onsite garden!

Thank you!

Thank you to Gary Peters for his generous donation to Sunflower Roots & Shoots in support of our Boca Community Garden project. His donation is funding soil and drip irrigation for the three beds we have there.

And a huge thank you to Gary Toll of Environmentally Controlled Waste for donating "black gold" soil materials (compost, mulch, gravel, peat moss) for our onsite Sunflower Roots & Shoots Community Garden.

Let's get outside! at Pondhawk Natural Area in Boca

Join us Wednesday, Oct. 24, 3:00-4:00 pm, for a nature outing at Pondhawk Natural Area. We will experience a nature walk and do an art activity. All Sunflower families and their friends are welcome to this fun free event!

An adult must accompany children. Sunflower staff cannot be responsible for any children. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring along some water.

How to get to Pondhawk: The natural area is located south of Yamato Road, east of Military Trail, and north of Spanish River Boulevard, in the city of Boca Raton. Park at Spanish River Library on Spanish River Blvd -- there are signs for the natural area there-- and then walk west, cross a little pedestrian bridge, circle around the lake a bit on a mixed use path-and you will come to the entrance. It is a short hike, but is clearly marked with signs.

Boca Community Garden-- Join us Nov. 3!
Middle and high school age members in Re-Cycos will be gardening at Boca Community Garden, on the first Saturday of the month, starting Nov.3. The garden is located next to the new downtown library, which is currently under construction. Produce will be donated to the Boca Helping Hands soup kitchen. Contact us at 561 482-3412 to get involved!
KaBOOM! Joy of Play Photo Contest
There is nothing quite as special as a child's smile - and the most joyful smiles always seem to emerge when kids are playing.

That's why our friends, the play advocates at KaBOOM! are hosting a Joy of Play photo contest this fall. Submit your best shot of your joyful child at play and you could win a $500 holiday shopping spree from KaBOOM!

Learn more and enter KaBOOM!'s contest here.

If anybody knows the joy of playing, it's our Sunflower families! So let's inundate KaBOOM! with photos of our happy kids at play. We think it would be extra awesome if somebody from our community won this contest!

Some Serious Resources on Play
by Jennifer Ligeti

We don't have leaf piles or snow piles here in south Florida, but occasionally we have large construction sand piles. Yesterday I drove by one. It was a Saturday so there weren't any workers around. But there were eight, maybe ten kids climbing up and rolling or sliding down.  It made me smile. Of course [...]...»

Six months ago, we moved to a new neighborhood. We were moving from a townhouse with almost no yard, and while my boys seemed to be fine playing in a tiny patch of nature, I was hoping for something larger. Our new house has a fenced back yard and a covered patio: perfect for playing [...]...»

After 25 years of teaching four- and five-year-olds I anticipate that moment in the school year that I can point to and say... this is where we became a community and learned  about each other, trust, and our connection to the world around us. This year [...]...»

I always told myself I wouldn't be the guy who dressed up his kid to look like him. But who was the guy putting a baseball cap on his boy's head as soon as it fit?
