Sun Life Financial invites applicants for Rising Star Awards

Sun Life Financial has issued a Request For Applications for the 2014 Sun Life Rising Star Awards, recognizing nonprofit organizations working to promote the academic achievement of underserved youth.

In its sixth year, the program provides grants to organizations in urban areas and scholarships to underserved youth. Qualifying students must exhibit leadership qualities and a commitment to their communities, while qualifying nonprofit organizations must promote academic excellence as a means to achieving life-long financial wellness. This year the program will award grants and scholarships in Boston, Nashville, San Francisco, South Florida, and the Tulsa/Oklahoma City region.

Sun Life will award grants of $50,000 to twelve nonprofit organizations working to promote the academic achievement of underserved youth. In turn, each nonprofit will nominate an exemplary student to receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Later this year, Sun Life will surprise winning students with their scholarships at individual award presentations led by prominent members of their communities.

See the Sun Life Financial website for complete program guidelines and application instructions, or review the full Request for Proposals.

While grantmaking remains extremely competitive due to slim coffers, the data provided by these foundations is reason "for at least some optimism among grant seekers." Read More...
