2013 Charitable Giving Report Findings Suggest Shift in Fundraising Strategy

While the highest percentage of charitable giving still takes place in December, key findings from the 2013 Charitable Giving Report (derived from The Blackbaud Index) show that many nonprofits are successfully moving away from dependence on year-end giving through simple shifts in strategy. Trends toward special campaigns like end-of-fiscal-year pushes in June or Giving Day events are driving donors to think (and act!) in new ways when it comes to charitable giving.

Other important findings:

  • 2013 saw the largest year-over-year increase in charitable giving since the "Great Recession."
  • Overall giving grew 4.9% in 2013, while online giving grew 13.5%.
  • Online giving accounted for 6.4% of all charitable giving in 2013.
  • Large organizations saw the greatest increase in overall giving, while small nonprofits grew their online giving the most.
  • Faith-based nonprofits had the biggest increase in online giving.
