Traveler's Corner

The Barrentine family just returned from a customized safari to South Africa, including a big cat-filled visit to the new Savanna Private Game Reserve. We loved the trip photos they shared with us! Check our Facebook page for more photos and see our 'Specials in Africa' above for special packages at Savanna!

Please send us your favorite photos or video when you return from your own African adventure.
Africa News & Events
AAC was part of a quirky list of unusual wine tasting experiences in this recent article on Epicure & Culture. We admit, not many people would think of shark-cage diving and wine tasting in the same day, but in South Africa, so many things are possible! If you'd like to do this, check out our blog, or give one of our safari specialists a call at 866.778.1089.

Traveling to South Africa with kids soon? Don't forget that they
have significant immigration rule changes taking effect Oct 1. From that date, travelers with a child under the age of 18 in their party will be required to present an original birth certificate for each child in addition to their passport for entry into the country. This is in effect for arrivals, departures and transit passengers.

The new road to Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge in Tanzania has been opened saving guests 45 minutes on their journey to the lodge by avoiding the Lemala Gate road!

August 2014

Every year, Travel + Leisure editors review hundreds of applications to produce the Travel+Leisure 'A-List,' its highly selective list of the 'most informed and well-connected' experts in the travel industry. The awards have been published in the September 2014 issue, on newsstands now. I am honored to be named among such elite company in this year's awards, the 13th annual listing.

My experience living in Africa, including working as a camp manager and guide, forever changed me. It created the foundation for me to follow my life's passion - sharing my favorite continent on earth with other people, and doing it in a way that is unique and special for each traveler. After more than 16 years in the business, I still want to share the Africa that I know and love, and to create safaris that are remembered forever by each person that makes the journey to visit Africa's wonders.

I would like to dedicate this award to the staff at Africa Adventure Consultants who work hard every day to help make our customers' safari dreams become reality. I would also like to thank all of our past and current customers for your support.

How Big is Africa?

Ever wonder how large Africa might be? This map illustrates the continent's size in a fascinating way. (You can view a bigger version here). As you can see, you can fit China, the United States, India, Japan and the whole of Europe within its borders - with a little room to spare!

Another way of looking at it - the distance between Liberia (in West Africa) to Dar es Saalam (in East Africa - Tanzania), is roughly the same as the distance from Washington, D.C. to Lima, Peru - more than 3,500 miles!
Did You Know?
Elephant tusks are actually elongated incisors and are essentially no different from other teeth. Tusks never stop growing. In the past older bulls often carried tusks weighing well over a hundred pounds each. However, due to the hunting of elephants for their ivory, the average size of tusks has considerably decreased, with the 'big tusk gene' becoming increasingly rare.
