An African safari is the perfect prescription for adventure lovers. Safaris are not only about sitting in a vehicle observing wildlife and scenery - though they certainly can be if that's what you like! These days, safari activities range the gamut from mountain biking (see my trip report on the Safari Journal Blog), to shark cage diving (which you can ask safari specialist Kim about - she did it a few months back and loved it).

All of us at Africa Adventure Consultants have sampled the amazing variety of adventure travel on offer on our favorite continent. Some of our favorites are tracking black rhinos on foot in Namibia, walking safaris in Zambia, trekking to see primates in Uganda, and perhaps the ultimate, touching the roof of Africa atop Mount Kilimanjaro.

What does your African adventure look like? Let us fulfill your vision and get your adrenaline pumping!

Kent's Travel in South Africa

Kent enjoyed a visit to South Africa last month, and his trip reports will be appearing on the Safari Journal Blog in the upcoming weeks. Here's a teaser of his first installment.

One of the perks of my job is to go to Africa on a regular basis. This trip I attended an exclusive travel conference, We Are Africa, in Cape Town. Here, I had the chance to stay at the historic Mount Nelson Hotel. (High tea, anyone?). I then traveled to Durban to attend the largest African travel conference in the world, Indaba.  Here, I stayed at The Oyster Box Hotel, which was a real treat since it's a classic hotel with great facilities and located on a beautiful stretch of beach north of the city. Both travel conferences provided great opportunities for networking and learning about developments in our industry, including some great new destinations, experiences, and safari camps and lodges.

But how could I visit South Africa without going on safari? Obviously, I could not. So, I tacked on visits to three top private game reserves in and around Kruger National Park. Here's what I found...

An elephant's ears are about one-sixth the size of its entire body! They are primarily used as a cooling device on hot African days. It has been shown that blood passing through the ears of an African elephant may lose as much as 48F of heat. To increase the effect, elephants spray their ears with water, and flap them to create cooling air currents.
