January 2013
Greetings!
   Livingstone 2013

2012 took us to myriad wonderful places in Africa. From Casablanca to Cape Town, Nairobi to Windhoek, and Mahale to the Magadakadi Pans, we had lots of adventures ourselves so that we might better craft your African safari.

This year, we open a new book on an old story - the life of David Livingstone and his exploration of the African continent.  2013 is the bicentennial of his birth, and to recognize that milestone, we are offering you the chance to follow in his historic footsteps with four unique signature safaris, starting with the Early Years and his time in what is now South Africa and Botswana, including the vast and fascinating Kalahari.

From there, Livingstone ventured further into Africa and was the first European to 'discover' Victoria Falls.  Walk in his steps throughout Zambia and Botswana, and enjoy an even more impressive vantage point of this natural wonder from your helicopter ride over the Falls.

To follow those famous words uttered by Stanley - 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume?' - puts you squarely on the shores of Lake Tanganyika for a Tanzanian adventure that includes chimpanzee trekking and time on its glorious coastline. You can also opt to revisit his late years less strenuously on our Final Journey safari.

Whether you choose one of our Livingstone trips or craft one of your own, you're sure to have an unforgettable adventure following in the footsteps of one of the world's most legendary explorers.

Last Chance to Win a South African Safari!

   MSMD adult color logo

We are in the final weeks to enter our 'Monkey See, Monkey Do' South African family safari contest!  We've given away lots of great prizes in our weekly quiz sweepstakes, but the grand prize is still up for grabs!  Just enter a video of 1 minute or less with your best South African safari animal impression.  The most creative and humorous video will win our fantastic family safari for 4! Right now, we have a ferocious battle going between some dung beetles and a South African 'jumping snake'. Will your animal impression join the fray for the prize?

We are also running a special limited-time promotion where we will donate $1 per quiz entry and $10 per video entry to a worthy African charity from Jan 9-31. So you can have fun *and* make a difference!  Last month, we donated $220 to Save the Rhino during a similar promotion.

The contest ends Jan 31!  Be sure to get your video entries in as soon as possible so that friends and family can vote for you!  Don't forget to vote for your favorite video (especially if it's your own!) - you can vote once every 24 hours.

You can enter here or visit our Facebook page, then click on the 'Monkey See, Monkey Do' contest logo.  Good luck!

Special thanks to our contest co-sponsors, South Africa Tourism and South African Airways!

Did You Know? Kenya lion G Healey

Lions have extremely rough tongues, with backward curving horned papillae covering the upper surface? This helps the lion to hold and lick meat from bones, and to remove parasites during grooming.
