Africa News & Events

Zambia is rebaseing the Kwacha currency by lopping off three zeros. Zambia will also be getting coins again. Currency rebasing usually does not change the exchange value of the currency and is introduced to make calculations easier. Zambia has announced that Dec 31 will be a public holiday to allow banks to prepare for the introduction of the rebased Kwacha for the Jan 1, 2013.

Congratulations to Margot Janse, chef at the incomparable Tasting Room restaurant at Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek, South Africa for taking top honors in this year's Eat Out food awards.  Yum!

Mark your calendars for the 4th annual Cape Town Carnival on March 16, 2013. This is a special day in the Mother City that unites the community with a spectacular celebration showcasing art, music and dance.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover.

December 2012
Greetings!
   Kim Katavi elephant 2012

The weather here in Denver has certainly been mild this autumn, but we're feeling the holiday spirit just the same.  Things are bustling in the office, especially with all of the activity around our Monkey See, Monkey Do South African safari contest, but we've made time to put together a list of holiday gift ideas for the travel lovers on your list (see 'Tis the Season' below).

Additionally, we're very pleased to offer the 'gift of travel' this year.  Give a loved one (or yourself!) an Africa Adventure Consultants gift certificate in any denomination to be used towards something incredibly meaningful and memorable - an African safari!

Finally, we have a gift for you.  When you book a safari before Dec 31, 2012 that is valued at $5,000 or more per person, we will give you a pair of safari binoculars so that you can get the best views on your game drives!

Happy holidays to you and yours from all of us here at Africa Adventure Consultants!

Special thanks to our contest co-sponsors, South Africa Tourism and South African Airways!

'Tis the Season!

The holidays always bring out the spirit of giving in all of us, and we love to spoil the travelers in our lives just a little bit this time of year.  We have a few suggestions on things any travel lover would be pleased to have on their next trip.

Safari photicular bookThe 'Ultimate Travel Pillow' has joined us on a few domestic flights, but is in the process of getting it's first 'real' test on a long-haul flight by Gretchen on her visit to South Africa this month.  We have high hopes for maximum comfort!

A headlamp can be invaluable for travel, whether you're in an unfamiliar hotel room, or walking to and from your tent on safari with an armload of gear.  We don't leave home without ours.

Speaking of travel, new this year is our 'Gift of Travel' - a certificate you can print out and give to a loved one to surprise them with the trip of a lifetime!

Something for the kids?  There are lots of movies about Africa and safaris, but check out the new photicular book called 'Safari' - it will take you back, and the 'moving picture' technology is just as neat now as it was when it first came out.  Check the blog tomorrow for a full review.  For more book ideas for children and adults, check us out on Goodreads.

We had some great gift ideas that we shared with you last year, as well as in 2010, which we of course still stand by - and one of those ideas is to give back.  There are lots of charities doing good work in Africa that deserve your support.  We have an ongoing partnership with AfricAid to help fund girls' education in Tanzania.  We also recently told you about the Namibia-based Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the important work they are doing.  Additionally, we are donating $1 per quiz entry and $5 per video entry in our Monkey See, Monkey Do safari contest to the Save the Rhino Foundation through Dec 14 - up to $500.  Whatever your passion, there is no doubt a good organization to funnel your time or donation to.

We wish you the best this holiday season!

Did You Know? Kim Katavi hippo 2012

Hippos can open their mouths to a massive 150 degrees or 4 feet wide, which show their large tusk-like canines and razor-sharp incisors. They are capable of biting a small boat in half (or a 10 foot crocodile!).
