Reflection:
"Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under control...This is also the case when it comes to God. Often we follow him, we accept him, but only up to a certain point. It is hard to abandon ourselves to him with complete trust, allowing the Holy Spirit to be the soul and guide of our lives in our every decision...The newness which God brings into our life is something that actually brings fulfillment, that gives true joy, true serenity, because God loves us and desires only our good. Let us ask ourselves today: Are we open to 'God's surprises'?"
-Pope Francis

Greetings!
We are familiar with the greeting "Happy Easter," but what about "Happy Pentecost"? Certainly, the disciples felt great joy when the Holy Spirit came over them, but do we feel the same enthusiasm for the presence of the Holy Spirit in our own lives?
Perhaps the problem is that the Holy Spirit has an uncomfortable way of disrupting our ambitions and decisions. It is that pesky Holy Spirit who calls us to be more like Jesus, and nags us when we are moving in the other direction.
But the Spirit is moving us towards joy! I was struck by this sitting at a table recently with local representatives of Catholic Community Services, St. Vincent de Paul, the Missions Office of the Archdiocese of Seattle, and JustFaith ministries. All of us are moved by the Holy Spirit to play our small role in serving the most poor and vulnerable of God's people, and all of us continue in our ministries because of the joy that it brings us, despite the day-to-day challenges that we may face.
Sitting at that table also highlighted for me the role that Maryknoll continues to play locally: working with you in the local Church towards building the Kingdom of God. Our principal formation program is called, "Continuing Pentecost Today." I think that this title really sums up why we do what we do in local communities like yours. Below, as always, you will find ways that you can continue to experience the joy of Pentecost.
Thank you again for being our partner in mission!
