Greetings!

May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus.  You may have wondered why Maryknoll has the name of our Blessed Mother in its name.  Father Price, co-founder of Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers along with Bishop James A. Walsh, had a special devotion to Our Lady.   Almost 100 years ago, they selected Sunset Hill overlooking the Hudson River, near Ossining, New York as the site for the Seminary and headquarters of the community.  This beautiful hill (knoll) became known as Mary's Knoll and the community as Maryknoll.

Mary is still very important to the Maryknoll family.  Enshrined in a red kiosk of Chinese design at the center of the Quadrangle at the Maryknoll Center stands the original sculpture by Sydney Woolett.  This is the site of the Departure Ceremony from which the mission bell is rung and Maryknollers journey to their foreign mission assignments.

Most local Mission Houses have a statue of Our Lady of Maryknoll to remind us of the co-founder's vision to live out the Mission of Christ at home and around the world through the example of Mary.  To learn more about the history of Maryknoll, visit www.maryknoll.us for links to the U.S. Regional Mission Houses and the main Society website at www.maryknollsociety.org.

Blessings,
Kris

Prayer to Our Lady of Maryknoll

Mary, Mother of all people and of their only Savior, look down upon this family that bears your name and be mindful of Maryknoll.  Remember that Maryknoll is the work of your inspiration and that it was cradled by your maternal hands.  Make Maryknoll truly yours in purpose and in spirit.  Keep it strong in charity, instant in prayer, humble in sentiment, bold and steadfast in its design to carry the name of Jesus to the uttermost ends of the Earth.

Inspire us, O Lady of Maryknoll, with that concern for people that fills your own Immaculate Heart.  Teach us to see the image of God in all people; to cherish the most neglected and despised among them; to labor for them as their servants; to die for them if need be, that they may live.

Mary, Mother and Queen of Maryknoll, give us, we beseech you, the true marks of your holy calling.  To you and your Divine Son we give the pledge of our love and loyalty now and forever.  Amen  (Bishop James E. Walsh)
The Other Side   Advent  Movie Night: The Other Side of Immigration

Based on over 700 interviews in rural Mexican towns where about half the population has migrated to the U.S. to work, The Other Side of Immigration asks why so many Mexicans come to the U.S. and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind.  A thought-provoking documentary provides a perspective on undocumented immigration rarely witnessed by American eyes, challenging audiences to imagine more creative and effective solutions to the problem. Running time: 55 min. Admission is FREE!  No wheelchair access. Discussion follows the film.

Taize Candle Lit Prayer Gathering
Second Wednesday of the Month
at 7 pm

Taize is a meditative common prayer using song, chants, scripture, reflection and periods of contemplative silence, a prayer that does not end, but continues in the silence of the heart. Within this sacred space one is drawn into a deeper awareness of God's presence; it is a prayerful opportunity for self-reflection.

Contemplative prayer is seen as a critical path in mission.   It is through prayer that we are connected with God and it is in the silence of our hearts that God communicates and shares with us God's mission of love for the world.

Taize will be held the second Wednesday of every month in the Chapel at the Maryknoll Center at 16642 Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo.

The hour long service will start at 7:00 p.m. with Ruth Picha.  Ruth is a Spiritual Director, who trained at Mercy Center in Burlingame.
