Reflection:
A Light in the Darkness

"If the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness."
-Victor Hugo
Les Miserables

Part of moving closer to Christ is bringing the light of Christ into the lives of those who suffer. This Lenten season, where can you bring light to others? Where might you have caused others to be in darkness?
Greetings!

One of the images of the Church coming out of the Second Vatican Council is that of a pilgrim people, travelers who seek the Reign of God. We seek it through an inward journey of prayer and contemplation, but also through our physical journey in this world, finding Christ in relationship with our brothers and sisters.

Lent is a perfect time to reflect on our pilgrim journey. It is a time to look inward and ask, "What do I need to embrace or give up in order to move closer to Christ?" It is also a time to look outward at our world, asking, "Where is Christ still suffering today? Where do we as a people need to go?"

In compiling content for this month's newsletter, it struck me how many people in our local community are embracing our identity as a pilgrim people. From deacons who will share their recent pilgrimage experience in Central America, to lay people that recently completed the first module of our Mission Education Training Program, to a local student council inspired by their teacher's immersion experience to enter into solidarity, we have so many powerful examples of our pilgrim church.

Where is God calling you?

Peace,

Christ of Maryknoll Lenz Icon Pilgrimage Deacons Seattle

Every year, Maryknoll sends priests, deacons, brothers, and bishops from across the US on pilgrimage to Central America.  There, they visit the graves of Archbishop Romero, Fr. Stan Rother of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, Bishop Gerardi of Guatemala, the martyred religious women, including two Maryknoll Sisters, the Jesuits and their companions, as well as others who gave their lives in witness to the Gospel.  They also visit with missioners and local church people living and working in Central America, often in very challenging circumstances.

On March 1st, Deacon Bill Batstone of St. Edward Parish in Shelton, WA will share his experiences in making this pilgrimage twice, most recently this past January. He will be joined by Deacon Juan Lezcano and Deacon Dennis Kelly of the Archdiocese of Seattle, who also made the pilgrimage this year.  Click here for details.

Young people at Caminando por la Paz, Guatemala City
After a teacher at St. Paul School in Seattle visited Guatemala this past summer, members of the student council at her school were so inspired by her experience at Caminando por la Paz in Guatemala City that they decided to help the program out.

Caminando por la Paz was started by Maryknoll Father Tom Goekler, and provides tutoring and tuition assistance to young people in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city. Recently, Maryknoll Affiliate Ron Covey, who runs the program with three young men whom Fr. Tom helped get off of the streets, sat down with the St. Paul student council to tell them more about the program and why any help that they can provide makes a real difference.

Thank you St. Paul School for living the mission!
