In July, we found extraordinary Angels families for
5 at-risk infants and toddlers.

Unfortunately, we had to turn away
20
babies because we had no families available for them.

Please help us find many more amazing families to care for our babies.

Thank you to the families who have already transformed the lives of our babies.
A Letter From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

As I travel around our County speaking to people about the plight of the youngest children in foster care, I'm always surprised by how little most of us know about what happens to abused and neglected babies who enter "the system." At Angels, we eat, sleep, and breathe these alarming facts, but most of our neighbors have no way of seeing what we do every day. Please help us to raise awareness by sharing this knowledge with your circle of friends, family, and colleagues.

Did you know...?

  • 70,000+ calls of suspected abuse come into San Diego's Child Abuse Hotline each year.
  • Children ages 0-3 are the most likely to experience abuse.
  • 25% of all children entering the foster care system are infants.
  • San Diego County has a child abuse rate of 12.8 per 1,000 - higher than state averages.
  • Infants and toddlers in traditional foster care will move to 3-4 homes in the first year.
  • 80% of those incarcerated in the US prison system were once in traditional foster care.

I know you share our commitment to changing these awful facts. They are all our children. It begins with awareness.

Hug your little ones close,

An Evening with Angels - October 25, 2013

Last year, Angels was forced to turn away 167 babies because we did not have ample resources to seek as many exceptional families as needed. Please support An Evening with Angels so no baby will be left behind.

Foster Family of the Month: Terra and Jeff

Four years ago, Terra and Jeff joined the Angels foster care team because they wanted to provide a stable, loving home to a child in need.  Their first was a 4 month old boy named Andrew who they had for nearly a year.  During that time, Andrew's mother worked hard to become stable and healthy and provide for her son.  Terra and Jeff were very supportive and built a strong relationship with Andrew's Mom so they could help create a smooth transition for the family to reunite.  Andrew is now a happy 4 year old, and they continue to see him often.  Since then, Terra and Jeff have fostered 3 more children, some with difficult behaviors and traumatic pasts. They are currently showering loving care on an adorable 3-year-old cutie pie who's been through a really rough time.  Jeff and Terra, along with their very helpful 10 and 12 year old daughters, Ashley and Sara, have demonstrated a tremendous strength, perseverance, and love throughout their fostering experience.  Angels honors them for their selfless commitment to these children and their families.

Terra and Jeff will enjoy a small token of our appreciation as part of this honor. Next time you visit the Angels office this month, look for their story near our entrance.

Diary of a Foster Mom: The Hand-Off

The actual hand-off to Bio-Mom was not so bad.

The aftermath, although still in its early stages, has not been too bad either.

By far, it was the anticipation of the hand-off that was most brutal.

There was a hearing scheduled in the afternoon, and we were quite sure a phone call would come that day announcing the decision. Such a level of certainty and advance notice would usually be a luxury, but it didn't feel like it this particular time...Continue Reading

Dear Dr. Mama,

My 5-year-old son is a healthy, happy little guy who's very outgoing, smart, and wonderful in every way. Except that he still wets the bed...almost every night.

I restrict his fluids after dinner and even get him up to go before I hit the hay later on, but nothing seems to work for very long. When I try a new strategy it seems to help for a couple nights, but then it's back to the same old thing. I feel like he's the only child his age with the problem, and something must be wrong with him, but the doctor says he'll outgrow it. I know this sounds crazy, but I'm ashamed of being ashamed.
