Many thanks to Hometown Hero, Philip Rivers, for generously offering his time and star power to appear in our Angels videos. Stay tuned for clips, and hear him talk about who his heroes are, why the Angels mission touches him so deeply, and why the Chargers are guaranteed a spot in the next Superbowl (just kidding about that last part)! Here he is with James, Angels alumnus and super fan.

In June, we found extraordinary Angels families for
5 at-risk infants and toddlers.

Unfortunately, we had to turn away
10
babies because we had no families available for them.

Please help us find many more amazing families to care for our babies.

Thank you to the families who have already transformed the lives of our babies.
A Letter From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Here at Angels, the lazy days of summer are far from it! San Diegans may be easing into long days at the beach followed by warm evening BBQs, but Angels families and staff are busier than ever.

Tonight, another amazing group of committed parents will complete training and get ready for "the call." This is our favorite time, because we know that, for awhile at least, little ones who need us will have open arms just waiting to catch them.

Thanks to you, whether you're a donor, an Angels family member, or a fan and supporter, there is a child who will be welcomed by loving parents prepared to heal their wounds - the ones you see as well as the ones you don't. With every adoring gaze, soothing touch, and babbling conversation, millions of little brain cells will be firing and connecting, paving the way for healthy development.

We thank you for helping us provide this critical care to more and more babies.  As Angels continues to grow, we depend on your support in every way. It is an incredible honor to do this work. You make it possible.

So get out to the beach, enjoy our glorious San Diego summer, and slather your babies with plenty of sunscreen.

  Happy July!

Foster Family of the Month: Elizabeth Ward

We are very excited to celebrate our foster parent of the month, Elizabeth Ward!

Elizabeth has demonstrated tremendous passion and dedication for both of the toddlers she has welcomed into her life. She embraces all the challenges and responsibilities of being a foster parent with an open mind and heart. Elizabeth is amazing at providing genuine support when working with the biological parents, while maintaining clear boundaries. She makes it her mission to tackle every developmental and emotional need of her kiddos with unconditional love and attention. As a single, working mom with a solid support system, Elizabeth is an excellent example of the success and beauty of a single mom. We would like to thank and celebrate Elizabeth for all of the love, hard work, and dedication she puts into being a foster parent. We are very proud to have Elizabeth on our team!

Elizabeth will enjoy a small token of our appreciation as part of this honor. Next time you visit the Angels office this month, look for her story near our entrance.

Diary of a Foster Mom: Women, Infants, and Competition

Dear Grocery Store,

I wanted to compliment all of the staff I interacted with today. I came in with two WIC checks specifying an exact amount of a particular baby formula (the type of formula, the size of the cans, the number of cans, and "must buy full quantity" was printed on the check), but the full quantity was not on the shelf...  Continue Reading

Dear Dr. Mama,

Now I've heard everything.

I recently struck up a friendship with the mom of one of my daughter's preschool classmates. We're in the "getting to know you" phase - that period when you're feeling each other out for similarities and differences. Like parenting styles, since conflict there can suck the air right out of a friendship. Let's call her Chloe.

Yesterday Chloe called all excited to announce that her little Nell has chickenpox. Nell never had the vaccine, because Chloe preferred to take her chances with the natural bug. Now she's glad that her strategy worked and is calling to invite us to a "pox party". Would I care to jump on this opportunity to infect my daughter?

There are a couple things about this situation that have me wondering. My daughter's already had the chicken pox vaccine, so we're declining the invite, but if Nell hasn't been vaccinated against chicken pox, isn't it likely she hasn't been immunized against other things like whooping cough or measles that could be dangerous for my child? Next, is there benefit in letting natural immunity take its course with some childhood infections? Should I have thought twice before I let her get that shot? Finally, is it common for parents to have these kinds of gatherings for their friends' children? What if one of the children gets seriously ill?

As a mom, I couldn't live with that.

I like Chloe and want to continue our friendship, but now I don't know. This stuff sounds crazy to me, but maybe I'm just out of the loop. What do you think?
