In February, we found extraordinary Angels families for
4 at-risk infants and toddlers.
Unfortunately, we had to turn away 16
babies because we had no families available for them.
Please help us find many more amazing families to care for our babies.
Thank you to the families who have already transformed the lives of our babies.

A Letter From Our Executive Director
|
Dear Friends,
I am often approached by friends and colleagues who ask how the Angels staff avoids becoming discouraged by the constant onslaught of child maltreatment in the face of a seriously challenged Child Welfare system. While there are certainly days when we feel like we are swimming upstream, the answer is simple: the babies.
If you have been to our office in Mission Valley (and I encourage you all to stop by), you know that the walls are covered with photographs of some of the children Angels has rescued over the past 14 years. These gorgeous pictures, each representing a little life saved, offer a constant reminder of our critical work. Every family, every child, every story offers hope and a shot at a healthier childhood.
Then there are the smiling, cuddly, and toddling ones who come to visit. Whenever one of our wonderful families stops by with the little one in tow, our entire staff drops everything to come out and play. No phone call, email, or deadline is too important to be interrupted when there is a kiddo in the house. Even the most frustrating day can be turned into a gift by a moment spent snuggling a newborn or playing catch with an irrepressible toddler.
Every child welcomed into our Angels family gets a second chance. There is nothing more inspiring. That is why my emails are signed with the phrase, "Bloom where you are planted." Our little ones certainly do.
Thank you for supporting our kiddos. We depend on you to help us fight for all our children.
With April hugs for your little ones,
Rachel

Diary of a Foster Mom: The Check is in the Mail
|

Money is always a question that comes up when people find out we are foster parents. "Do you have to pay for all of his stuff?" "How much money do you make?" "You get paid, right?"
I don't get offended by these questions. I am actually amused. They usually come from people who don't understand why we are taking care of other people's babies to begin with. And then add the fact that we don't get paid for it... Phew, that really throws them...

Ask Dr. Mama
|
Dr. Mama is better known as Rachel Zahn, MD, a pediatrician, a mom of three grown kids, and the Executive Director of Angels. Rachel is always available to offer support to our foster parents, and is happy to answer any question you may have. For more parenting advice, check out her website MamasOnCall.com.
Dear Dr. Mama,
Ever since our daughter was tiny, she has reacted to any sudden, loud noises. When she was a baby, I couldn't even vacuum without her getting all worked up. Barking dogs would send her into wails of terror. Now, at two years old, she has gotten a bit better, but still loses it when a loud lawnmower or construction noise disturbs the peace.
My husband and I always handle it by removing her from the situation, when possible, or reassuring her with "It's okay, it is just a _____." Is this the right approach or am I missing something? Could there be something wrong with her hearing? Is there something more we should be doing? Our older child, who is four years old, never had this problem and we are starting to worry.
Sincerely,
Sensitive in Scripps Ranch

Time to LOVE Sarah
|
Sarah has been in foster care since birth and is now two years old. Both of Sarah's parents are unable to care for her, as they are in and out of jail and drug rehabilitation. She is currently in a wonderful Angels home with much needed attention and stimulation. Six months ago, Sarah's biological brother was born and her Angels Family decided to offer their home so the siblings could be together. Recently, this Angels Family has experienced a major health emergency while caring for Sarah and her brother. This month, we are hoping to raise $600 to provide additional support for Sarah, her brother, and their Angels Family in their journeys to heal.

Foster Family of the Month
|
This month, we are excited to recognize Jeff, Becky, and their 12 year old son, Lucas, as our April Foster Family of the Month! These baseball loving superstars have handled the ups and downs of fostering with tremendous grace and love. They step up to the plate when it comes to nurturing and advocating for the children in their home. Big brother, Lucas, has been an inspiration for his little foster brother both on and off the baseball field. Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work!
Jeff, Becky, and Lucas will enjoy a small token of our appreciation as part of this honor. Next time you visit the Angels office this month, look for their story near our entrance.
