February 14

Sara, will you be our Valentine?

Today, we are so excited to recognize Sara, one of our veteran Angels foster siblings. She is an amazing young woman who just had a birthday and suggested that instead of presents, her family and friends make a donation to Angels. We are in awe of Sara's selflessness and know Angels would not be possible without people like her. We ♥ Sara!

In February, we found extraordinary Angels families for
7 at-risk infants and toddlers.

Unfortunately, we had to turn away 3
babies because we had no families available for them.

Please help us find many more amazing families to care for our babies.

Thank you to the families who have already transformed the lives of our babies.
A Letter From Our Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Spring is upon us! There are buds on the trees, temperatures are slowly creeping up, and each day more moments of light are added to early mornings and late afternoons. The season of new beginnings is here.

At Angels, we see new starts every day. This week, we received a call about little Casey, who had spent months withdrawing from narcotics in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and was ready for discharge. The nurses were worried that her fragile temperament and sensitive nervous system would make it impossible to find a family for her. Two other families had already said no after hearing how tough she was.

But tough is what Angels families do.

Our Mom and Dad were ready and waiting for the call. They went right to the nursery and learned all they could about caring for her special needs. Now, a few days later, she's doing beautifully - eating, sleeping, and sucking up all the healing love they have to give. Chances are good that weeks from now, after being showered with the one-on-one care our families are trained to give, Casey will be indistinguishable from the other babies born in that nursery.

Will she always bear traces of the rough beginnings that kept her hospitalized for so long? Maybe, we don't know for sure. But one thing is certain: Casey has been given a new start and a second chance. Like the tiny buds on the trees, her future is full of possibility.

Thank you for helping to provide a second chance for our babies.

Warmly,

Rachel

Diary of a Foster Mom: Exactly How We Feel!

timothy green Have you seen the movie The Odd Life of Timothy Green? Jennifer Garner stars in it. We watched it as a family one night. Not many movies allow us to do that these days. AMAZING! Obviously not real, but the message hit our home and hearts strongly!

"If  you came to me and said there are two people in the world who want you more than anything, ...

Dear Dr. Mama,

Our five-month-old foster baby is having a really tough time! He came to us as a newborn, and the poor little guy has had multiple problems during his time with us. He's always been a terrible spitter. It seems like he loses up to ½ of each feeding, and he seems gassy and uncomfortable all the time. We are still feeding him every two hours because he gets hungry that fast (probably because he gives back so much of what he eats) and even then, he gets squirmy and crabby after eating. He never seems full and happy, but we hesitate to start solid food before figuring this out.

His pediatrician diagnosed acid reflux and started him on Zantac, which hasn't helped one bit. Now he's suggesting we try him on Prilosec, which isn't covered by insurance, costs a fortune, and doesn't even come in children's liquid form!

Along with the feeding problem, he has eczema on his face and neck that gets better and worse, but never fully disappears. The doctor suggested a lactose-free formula but it smelled and tasted awful and he wouldn't drink it (I don't blame him - it was gross). I feel so bad for the little peanut. What do we try next?

Time to LOVE Kylie
It's not every day that we're able to offer an older toddler such a terrific Angels family. Because of the neglect she suffered before joining her Angels home, Kylie has some developmental delays and behavioral difficulties, requiring weekly therapies. Her Angels mom works part-time and is able to spend a great deal of time helping Kylie heal, but she also needs the structure and kid contact that only preschool can provide. This month, we're trying to raise $300 to help support Kylie's extra therapies and a portion of her preschool tuition. Can you donate any amount to help?

Thank You Art 'n Motion Dancers!

A BIG thank you to our dancing friends at Art 'n Motion Dance who donated fabulous diaper bags filled to the brim with much needed baby supplies!

Along with the donations, came some thank you letters for the Angels office.  Little Olivia wrote, "I love what you do! Finding homes for newborn babies takes alot, and you do it all day long!" Olivia, we love it too!

Foster Family of the Month

We are excited to announce our very first featured Foster Family of the Month!  It was a unanimous decision to honor Dale and Ana Griffin, as they have fostered thirteen babies with Angels - the most of any of our current foster families! Not only do they provide loving care for tiny babies, they provide exceptional support to biological parents, and often continue close relationships after successful reunification. Their very first Angels baby is almost five years old now, and they are still central figures in his life.  Dale and Ana often join our Foster Parent Panel during training sessions, offering insight and encouragement to brand new families.  Congratulations Dale and Ana!

Dale and Ana will enjoy a small token of our appreciation as part of this honor. Next time you visit the Angels office this month, look for their story near our entrance.

 Angels at Work

Angels supporters have been placing these impactful brochure displays in their workplaces. Bring Angels to work and help us find more families to keep our babies safe and loved.

If you or someone you know would like to support our babies in the workplace, please call our Family Outreach Coordinator, Karen, at (619) 283-8100 ext. 229.
Thank You Corner

Angels is thankful for the donations of our valued friends. Without your generosity we could not provide the stable love and care that promotes healthy childhood development for San Diego children in need.
