JANUARY 2016
6 More Weeks of Winter? We're Keeping Busy!
Don Kirby, Executive Director, 262.224.4949

After a long day on the road Tuesday trying to avoid the snowstorm, it's great to be tucked away, snug in my office, having cleaned up the remnants of our Groundhog's day storm up here in the Valley. Besides picking up a pair of huge loads from Cabela's on Tuesday (yep - we've got LOTS of awesome packages again this year, plus a bunch of sweet ice shacks!), Kelcy and I spent most of that morning with the tech staff from Orion, as they taught us how to administer the "back end" of our new website - the updated wisducks.org - which we'll be releasing, later this winter!

A huge "thank you" has to go out to our Fox River chapter team, who hosted a great dinner event,  following the completion of the WWA Annual Meeting, last Saturday, at the City Inn in Berlin. Attendance was up, the prizes were even better, and thanks to a doors open time of 4:30, we made the last call at ten minutes after 9pm, which made for an early night, to boot!
Some of the youth in attendance at the Fox River banquet show off their new gear

What a great way to start off our fundraising events for this year! Thanks to the team, to our board members who joined in, and to all the attendees who chose to come, participate, and make it a super-fun night!

Next up this month will come our booth at the Wausau hunting expo, in about ten days, and then at month's end will be the return of theNorthern Wetlands chapter, and their annual dinner banquet. We're also pleased to announce that the long-anticipated WWA Shoot Series has come to fruition this year. Although the promotional posters are still being developed, there's a quick preview in this newsletter, you'll see it below.

During the recent Annual Meeting, we got the new Board of Directors together, including the return of former member, John Regan, just re-elected at the end of last year. We again have thirteen members, ready to serve, and they've elected the following officers, to serve for the next two years: Bruce Urben, President; John Regan, Vice President; Russ Olson, Treasurer, and Randy Helbach, Secretary. For more information on the meeting, check out the recap, below. Its great news for all of us, when good folks are willing to serve the association in this way.

See you on the water...Don
2016 Annual Meeting Recap
Volunteer of the Year Chris Ferch (right) accepts his award while ED Don Kirby expounds on Chris's virtures as a volunteer
On Saturday, January 30th, we met at the City Inn, the site of that evening's Fox River Chapter dinner banquet, and convened the annual meeting of WWA, as required in our by-laws.  The highlights of the day included:

The following volunteer teams were recognized for exceeding their SuperGoal in financial performance during 2015:
  • Northern Wetlands Chapter- Rhinelander
  • Fox Valley Chapter - Appleton
  • Twin Rivers Chapter - Jefferson County
  • Waukesha County Chapter
  • Ozaukee Shoot
  • West Allis Chapter
  • Fox River Chapter - Berlin
  • SE WI Golf Outing
  • Green Bay Chapter
  • Baraboo River Chapter
  • Midland Wings Chapter - West Bend
These Chapter teams received special awards for their performances during 2015:
  • Best Net to Gross, with 73% efficiency: State Shoot @ Wern Valley
  • Best Increase Over Last Year: Northern Wetlands Chapter
  • 2015 Highest Net Contribution - TOP GUN: Green Bay Chapter
Honorable mention goes to the Fox River Chapter, which in its first year, doubled their  expected performance! Way to go, rookies!

The staff made their selection for Volunteer of the Year, choosing Chris Ferch, pictured above, Marshland Chapter, for his efforts, in building & maintaining a vibrant community of supporters of WWA, on Facebook. During the past year, Chris not only added more than 1,000 people to our Facebook friend's group page, but he also choose to fill in a spot on our board of directors, following the resignation of another member. His careful cultivation and protection of our image and brand on social media requires near-constant vigilance. Congrats to Chris!

Also honored was long-time volunteer (15 years!) Jim Rogers of our Appleton/Valley chapter.  Thank you to Jim for his many years of service as he steps down (but not away) from his role as chair of the committee.

Thanks to all who joined us, we look forward to a great 2016!
WWA Partners with Badger Sportsman
All of us at WWA are very excited to announce a unique opportunity for our members to enjoy a great outdoors publication, covering Wisconsin topics, while at the same time, supporting WWA's works!

For a limited time, the publishers of Badger Sportsman magazine will contribute 1/2 the value of any new 1-year subscriptions, made by WWA members, back to WWA in the form of a cash donation.  Thus, for every $14.95 payment received from a WWA member, for their new 1-year, 6 issue subscription, WWA will receive $7.50 back! As you can imagine, if even a small portion of our membership elects to take advantage of this opportunity, it could pay HUGE dividends for WWA, and turn Badger Sportsman magazine, into one of our most impactful State Sponsors!

But, "what's the catch", you might ask?  There is none.  Badger Sportsman wants to expand their subscriber base, and their leadership and I kept finding ourselves at the same places.  We began talking about magazines, and how some of our membership still misses our old "Wisconsin Waterfowl"  WWA membership magazine, discontinued in 2011. In this way, you can enjoy the full color pictures and stories of living the outdoor lifestyle in Wisconsin, that come with every issue of Badger Sportsman, they get to enjoy your new patronage, and WWA gets to enjoy a significant new source of funding to help support our wetland restorations and other works all around the state. Additionally, WWA will be featured in articles in Badger Sportsman later this year. WIN-WIN-WIN!  What's not to like?

If you want to take advantage of this offer, its really easy.  At our upcoming outreach events, you'll find a mail-in card at the registration table when you check in. Or, if you want to get the program rolling right now, then
go to their website via the WWA link to sign up and half your subscription rate will be donated back to WWA!

A huge thank you to Chris Carns, and all the team at Badger Sportsman magazine, for helping us to craft this offer for you, for their support of WWA in Wisconsin, and their commitment to conservation in our great state!

(Please note, use this link to susbscribe and no code is needed.  However, if you subscribe via Badger Sportsman's main website, please use promo code MALLARD in checkout to indicate you are a WWA member asking for the donation back to WWA.)
Calling Them In: Recruit a Volunteer, Win BIG!!
Two Beretta A300 Outlander 12 g. shotguns will be given away, at the 2017 meeting next January, to help our chapters build better teams.

Do you know of (or are
you, yourself) someone who might like to help WWA and our great state of Wisconsin by becoming a member of one of WWA's volunteer committees?  Well, have we got a deal for you! Starting in 2016 WWA will be running a promotional volunteer recruitment program and we'll be giving away TWO Beretta A300 Outlander 12ga shotguns:
  • One Beretta will be given to an existing volunteer who recruits a new volunteer. (Recruiters gun)
  • One Beretta will be given to a newly recruited volunteer. (Recruit gun)
For each new volunteer, the recruiter and the new recruit will each receive a chance towards a gun.

There is no limit as to how many people you can recruit!

Tom's Banquet Corner
Tom Seibert, Regional Director, 414.750.8260

I'd like to thank all of you who attended our Fox River Chapter Banquet this past Saturday evening. You were part of a record setting event for this volunteer group; congratulations to you and the entire committee for starting off the new year for WWA with an explosion of games guns, prizes and numerous smiling faces. Again, thank you all.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Russell Moccasin Co. for supporting the Fox River Chapter, located in their hometown of Berlin, WI. Didn't get out to our banquet to see this amazing donation from Russell Moccasin?  Well, you're in luck, as Russell Moccasin is donating custom made Russell Boots, crafted right here in Berlin, WI, to several of our events this year! Russell Moccasin has been making boots and moccasins for Presidents and royalty the world over for more than a century right. They use leather from a multitude of sources, all to enhance comfort, performance and durability. They make the world's finest moccasin style footwear the old fashioned way, by hand.  So plan to attend a WWA banquet where you may have a chance to take home a custom pair of their most popular hunting boot, the Signature South 40 Birdshooter II (MSRP of over $500!). Thanks again to the Russell Moccasin Co. for their contribution to helping us make Wisconsin a greener place to live.

So far I've let you in on the great sponsor products you'll be seeing at WWA banquets from our Cabela's Outdoor Leisure Package and now the world famous Russell Moccasins, but these are just a couple of products from our great sponsors that you can win at our events this year. Keep reading my eNewsletter column each month for our sponsor product highlights!

We have lots of great events coming up this spring, our next few months are highlighted, below, and our website has all of our events listed as well. Next up is our Northern Wetlands Chapter Banquet taking place February 27th in Rhinelander at the Northwoods Banquet Center. If you can't attend but would like to enter their huge 7-Prize Pre-Event Raffle, please contact me for tickets.

Hurry to win one or more of these great prizes that will be given away at the Banquet Feb. 27th!

Come on over to say hi at our upcoming sports shows, I'd love to see you at the Central WI Deer & Hunting Expo in Wausau (Feb. 12th - 14th) and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sports Show (March 2nd - 6th), where I'll also be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win our Coastal Texas Waterfowlers Dream Hunt and a bonus prize to be given away at the end of each show. See you there.

President's Note
Season Planning by Bruce G. Urben, President
null

It was great seeing some of you at our annual meeting last weekend!  To continue my update, for those of you that couldn't join us,
beginning in 2016 the US Fish and Wildlife Service has  streamlined the process for regulation of waterfowl hunting. The Service has issued their preliminary regulation proposals to the States, which include a 60 day duck season and similar bag limits to 2015! Your Wisconsin Waterfowl Association has a seat at the table with regulators to provide input for several options in 2016 and beyond. In February, I will be representing WWA at the Wisconsin Wildlife Federations waterfowl council to review the new reg. setting process,  as well as to discuss duck/goose season options, zone line options for the 2017-2021 seasons, potential future goose regulations and goose zone changes. I would appreciate your input on any of these issues. If you feel strongly that a change is needed or if the current regulations are working please contact me to relay your concerns and proposals before the February 13th meeting. Your input is important! The new regulation process should conclude by late spring and final reg's should be available by mid summer so your season planning can take place. We will keep you "up to speed" in future newsletters as  these regulations are finalized.

The 2016 season seems so far away right now with new snow to shovel this week on the driveway. But, there is no better time to plan for our waterfowl's future and to know that your WWA is a part of that planning process.

Sponsor Spotlight - Andis Company
All of us at WWA are terrifically excited to announce the addition of another great Wisconsin company to the family of State Sponsors and Donors! Folks that attend our fundraising outreach events this year will have a chance to win one of the series of incredible Andis grooming products, both for people and our animals - in their Realtree camo lineup! How cool is that?

Through his connections to the conservation world, company president Matt Andis has demonstrated his commitment to the outdoors time and again, and now their 90+ years of heritage, serving markets all over the world, from their home-base in Racine, will be working in partnership with Wisconsin Waterfowl Association, to help us continue our works in this great state. We'll be featuring four different products this year at our events - two for people, two for pets!

Check out this statement from their website:

What lies ahead? Andis intends to continue to innovate with new products, to listen to what their markets want, to bring real value to all their markets, and quite simply, to supply products that make people look better and feel better. The fourth generation has developed a strategic planning process that is a way of life, guiding the Company along to its vision, while remaining true to its legacy and roots.

Andis continues to grow globally. Almost 80 years ago Andis introduced products to Europe and today these products are available in 90 countries around the world. Barbers, stylists, groomers, and consumers everywhere continue to reach for Andis clippers, trimmers, dryers, blades, curling irons and flat irons when they need top- performing tools.

With more product innovation, a long-term strategy and the drive of a dedicated workforce, many more great things are yet to come for Andis Company.

Like all of our sponsor-partners, we encourage you to support those who support us. We are very pleased to have Andis choose to support the works of WWA, all around Wisconsin, and to be able to offer their fine products to our membership at our events. First Waterfowl-Wetlands Conservation Chair Name at UW-Stevens Point
A waterfowl expert who is also an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will be the first to hold the Kennedy-Grohne Endowed Chair in Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation, a new faculty position in the College of Natural Resources.

Jacob Straub, an assistant professor at the State University of New York-Plattsburgh's Center for Earth and Environmental Science, will join UW-Stevens Point in August 2016. He has taught avian ecology and conservation and forest ecology, among other courses at SUNY since 2013. Straub is already an active and respected participant in waterfowl and wetlands research and issues at the national level.

The endowed chair was created with gifts totaling $2 million to UWSP Foundation from James C. Kennedy of Atlanta, Ga., and David F. Grohne of Wilmington, Ill.

The position will significantly enhance opportunities in waterfowl and wetlands research, outreach and education, according to Christine Thomas, dean of the College of Natural Resources at UW-Stevens Point. It will help secure the future of healthy waterfowl populations, especially along the northern section of the Mississippi Flyway. Thomas announced the hire today (Jan. 30) following a national search. The Perfect Duck Boat (In My Opinion)
By Dale Arenz, former WWA President

Former WWA President Dale Arenz,

Back in 2009 I wrote an article for WWA describing a new boat called the Gheenoe, which was the combination of the best qualities of a canoe and a tri-hull boat. I was testing the Gheenoe to see if it was "the perfect duck boat for marshes and small lakes".  Since that article appeared, I've received a number of inquiries regarding the boat. To inform all those folks who called and wrote me about the Gheenoe, as well as the rest of you, I feel an update on my favorite boat is indeed in order.

Please understand, I am in no way connected with Gheen Manufacturing, the manufacturer of the Gheenoe boats and receive nothing from them other than their thanks.

I now own three Gheenoes, a 13-footer, and two 15-footers and I love them. The image below is one of my boats, with my custom paint job, of course. They have met my every expectation of what I would consider a perfect marsh and small-water waterfowl craft.
It can be paddled, rowed, motored or push-poled easily through the water, and is extremely sturdy to hunt out of. You can stand in it without any fear of tipping and it slides into the cattails easily. We use them on rivers, marshes and lakes as large as 850 acres and have never been concerned about safety.
Anyone interested in more information on the Gheenoe feel free to contact me or check out their website.
Master Planning Efforts to Begin for Totogatic
Master planning efforts are set to begin for Namekagon Barrens and Douglas County wildlife areas and Totogatic Wild River area, and the public is encouraged to provide input.

Here, attendees will have the opportunity to review maps, review the Regional and Property Analysis, contribute management suggestions, and discuss ideas with department staff.

For those unable to attend the open house, public input will be accepted Monday, Jan. 25 through Friday, Feb. 12, and can be submitted online through a comment form found on the Department of Natural Resources' master planning page. Comments may also be sent to Beth Kienbaum, Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources, 101 S. Webster Street - LF/6 Madison WI 53707 or via email at beth.kienbaum@wisconsin.gov.
