JANUARY 2016
Happy New Year!
Don Kirby, Executive Director, 262.224.4949

Thanks for taking a moment to review what's going on with your Association. Well, Jake, the family, and I are back home, we've survived our road-trip vacation adventure, and he still has a big chew-bone to work on, remnants of Christmas past.

Back at work, once again, the final moments of the 2016 Conservation Calendar sales effort bring on a frenzied feel for volunteers and staff alike. A special thanks for all of the volunteers who work so hard to make sales, and fill orders on the Calendar, for our seventh year. Remember, with the first drawing coming next Monday night, we've got the deadline for drawing stubs and monies to be submitted to Kelcy at the Wales office, by this Friday, the 8th - earlier than ever before. This is due, in part, because for this year, the drawings will rotate, always occurring on the 2nd Monday of any given month. This will eliminate any weekend drawing dates, for this year. Results will always be posted by Wednesday that same week.

On another positive note, WWA can count another new Life Sponsor and Life Member to our ranks, following a great end-of-year flurry of activity. A huge thanks to Jack Olson and Randy Hess, respectively, for choosing to make such significant contributions to our efforts. Our membership ranks have swelled again, and I fully expect we'll crest over 6,000 now again, when we finally get a chance to catch our collective breath, and finish counting noses. I hope they, along with many of you, choose to join us to talk all things WWA, on January 30th, for the annual meeting, this year, in Berlin (see below).

At any rate - it looks to be a great year for WWA - keep watching these pages for the updates you'll need, to know when, where, and how YOU can participate in the works of this great association, as we enter our 32nd year.
See you on the water...Don

A Happy New Year to all of you, from all of us here WWA. Thank you all for helping us make 2015 another productive year. With your support we can continue to accomplish the lofty goals we set forth and continue on our mission of Legislation, Education and Habitat Restoration.

We will have many new things at our events this year along with the tried and true games, raffles and prizes you so much enjoy.   I will bring you highlights each month here in my column on all our new and exciting events and prizes. This year we will be running an expanded 5-location series of Sporting Clay shoots with special raffles and games at each. We will also have special deals and prizes for those of you who shoot at multiple events, so stay tuned for details on that.

I recently picked up this year's sponsor donation from Cabela's and we're pretty excited about it. Thanks to Cabela's generous Silver Level Sponsorship, you will have an opportunity to win a pair of Cabela's camp chairs and a stainless propane gas table top grill at each of our events! This is a mighty fine outdoor relaxation package; thank you Cabela's for your continued support!

Thanks to each and every one of you who assisted with our 2016 Calendar Raffle sales. We have sold most of the 4,000 available and we are running out of stock in most locations, but we do still have calendars left so please, help us sell out this year and contact me or the state office if you haven't gotten your calendar yet. The first drawing is next week Monday the 11th, though, so hurry and purchase your calendar today! You have a 1 in 11 chance of winning some fine prizes this year.

I'd like to take this opportunity to cordially invite each of you to our State Meeting in Berlin, WI, this year. See how your dollars are spent. Give kudos to our most successful chapters and follow that up with a night of fun and games and great guns at the Fox River Chapter banquet all at the same facility. I hope to see you there.

Again, thank you for all your support. Let us make 2016 a great year!!
Legislative Update
Today, WWA signed on with Ducks Unlimited, NWTF, Pheasants Forever and Capitol Dome the Green Bay Duckhunters Association, in opposition to aspects of Assembly Bill 600, in a letter supporting testimony offered at a public hearing on this bill.  As detailed in the letter, here, there are many aspects of this proposed legislation which will have negative impacts on the wetland habitats that are important for breeding and migrating waterfowl, as well as other species, and so, along with the WI Wetlands Association taking the lead, and the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, we hope to see significant changes made to this proposed bill.  We'll keep you posted on this issue, following today's public hearing, as things progress.... Wild Rice Advisory Team Update

As some of you know, WWA serves on the WDNR wild rice team, in recognition of our efforts to do wild rice restorations in the northern tier of the state. Just last this past week, DNR released its new video on wild rice; it's intended to discuss some of the key ethical components of rice harvesting, to discuss harvest regulations for Wisconsin,  promote the recruitment of new rice harvesters and to promote the conservation of this resource - important for migrating waterfowl and humans as a food source.

Sponsor Spotlight - Mathews Archery
Today, our load of Mathews bows arrived at my home office, a year's worth of winnings for the 2016 Conservation Calendar. As we prepare to begin another year's worth of Conservation Calendar drawings, my UPS guy always comments about how he hopes this year we'll pull his name out of the big drum. Well, this year many will have that option again, as beyond the pile of Z2's featured in the Calendar, WWA events will be able to offer the incredible Mathews Z2 vertical bow, the Mission Riot vertical bow with hunter's accessory kit, and the Mission MXB360 crossbow, in either Lost AT Camo or Tactical versions, as options among our raffle prizes. We are fortunate to have partners like Mathews, with their incredible reputation for quality that helps make our prize selection so strong. This, in turn, helps build demand for the Calendars, and our outreach events, both of which provide such an important fund-raising revenue stream for WWA.

Located in Sparta, Wisconsin, Mathews, Inc. currently employs a staff of over 300 people and operates three local facilities to a diverse line of archery equipment, bow components and accessories for authorized retailers all over the world.  Our success is predicated on our commitment to three steadfast core values: innovation, integrity and impact.

Thanks to Mathews Archery for your assistance to WWA, and for continuing to make "Made in Wisconsin" mean something special!

WWA'S 2016 CALENDAR RAFFLE

Thank you to everyone who purchased our 2016 Conservation Calendar! This raffle was again an immensely successful fundraiser for our organization's mission.

NEW for 2016: Drawings will be held on the SECOND MONDAY of each month and all drawings will be held at Stadium Bar, 301 Knapp Street, Oshkosh, WI 54902 at 6:00 p.m. The drawing is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.

Winner's results are posted online by noon on the Tuesday following the drawing and can also be obtained by request via email or by calling (262) 968-1722 or writing to PO Box 427, Wales, WI 53183.

Good luck to all who are entered!
The elections are complete, and we've got the first meeting of our new Board of Directors on the 30th, this year, we're heading to Berlin, to the City Inn, using part of the same venue that will host the 2nd Annual Fox River Chapter dinner event, later that same evening! This will allow attendees to spend a fun afternoon "talking shop", and then spend the evening relaxing at a great social event, all while supporting WWA! The draft agenda can be seen here and we'd be happy to have any members join us, even if you're not currently a part of any of the organized chapter groups. It's a good time to learn about what we've got going on, our plans for the future, as well as offering your input, and getting questions answered.

There is no charge for our members to attend our afternoon session but for space & material planning purposes, please RSVP if you plan to attend no later than Monday, January 25th.

Central Wisconsin Deer & Hunting Expo
Visit Our Booth on February 12-14th!

Tom and Don are super excited to be returning to the Wausau area for the  2016 Central Wisconsin Deer & Hunting Expo, Friday, February 12th through Sunday, February 14th, in Rothschild. We last hosted a show-booth in Wausau, back in 2011, before our long standing chapter team elected to retire as a group, that same year, after a full 25 year career of working for WWA's success!

They'll be joining Richie and Paul, two new WWA volunteers, in seeking additional chapter committee members for the Wausau and Stevens Point areas.  Plus, we'll be running a special class A raffle, which will be drawn a couple weeks later, again in Wausau, at the WI Waterfowl Hunters Conference.

Here's your first reminder: if you desire to have an opportunity to immerse yourself more deeply in the details of Wisconsin's duck hunting past, present, and future, the time might be right for you to consider joining many of us from WWA who attend the Wisconsin Waterfowl Hunters Conference, returning again to Wausau, on Friday, March 11th and Saturday, March 12th (you'll be done in plenty of time on Saturday, to make it to our Baraboo dinner event that night!). For more information, check out their website. The all-volunteer steering committee provides a diverse series of topics, demonstrations and speakers each year. Consider joining the fun this year, and make it a point to attend!
