Wisconsin Waterfowl Association eNews - December 2015

Today is Giving Tuesday, you may have seen our special appeal, Kelcy sent it out early this morning. Now a staple of the non-profit world, it seeks to engage folks to contribute to their favorite cause. Since we've already made that appeal, I'll switch things up with this note, and simply thank all of you; for taking a moment to review this update, for helping with one of our habitat projects over the course of the year, for attending or helping host a fund-raising event, for buying a Conservation Calendar, or one of so many of the different ways that our members and friends choose to support the efforts of the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association.

Thanks too, to our valued sponsors and donors - both those of high-profile, among our "state partners", and those whose contributions help power our individual chapters, in cities and towns, all around the state. It is the combined efforts of so many of you out there, each making your contribution, through your time, your talents, your connections, and your financial support, that makes this association successful. Thanks to all of you, for choosing to support our Association, with your time, your attention, your effort and your financial assistance.

We've got several updates, below, covering next week's Lakeshore event - sure to be a good time, as well as the "last call" for 2016 Conservation Calendar sales, and even a reminder about next year's change in the timeline for setting the waterfowl hunting seasons, from last month's Migratory Committee meeting. As always, if you're reading this note, and didn't get to attend a banquet or other event this year, for whatever reason - consider renewing your Membership, now - on-line, or by contacting Kelcy at the "home office". Your financial contribution is critical, but so is your very presence. As our Association grows, so does our clout, with potential sponsors, vendors, and other agencies. Or, if you are a Member, considering making one of your hunting buddies, or a family member, a gift of a Membership - who knows, maybe you'll start them on a path of participation in conservation that could last forever! Every Membership helps, in many ways, and with the increases we've seen over the last year and half or so, things are looking up.

Finally, as we enter the end of the year, a tax-deduction reminder: WWA is a resource for those individuals and businesses who find themselves in a position to make charitable donations, to improve their tax liability position. WWA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and your choice to assist us with our works in habitat restoration, learn-to-hunts, and the like can also assist you, or your business, if providing a charitable donation is part of your tax planning process. Whether you consider advancing into a Life Member or Life Sponsor status, or simply wish to make a business contribution, WWA can certainly use your help! With WWA's endowment account established in the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, those who wish for their assistance to be protected, long-term, can now participate in that way, more easily than ever (undesignated Life Member funds are assigned to this endowment account)!

Thank you, to all of you that help make this Association, and its important works, possible.   Here's to wishing all of us a very happy holiday season, with a Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
Wishing I was out there; with the shores of Green Bay getting crunchy it must be December again...

See you on the water,

Don Kirby - WWA Executive Director; dpkwwa@gmail.com

Project Program Update

Peter Ziegler
The season has wound down, not just waterfowl, but project season as well. We had great weather for project construction this late summer and fall, up until recently. WWA completed on the ground restoration projects in seven counties this season, covering a wide range of Wisconsin as well, allowing our habitat program to impact and reach many people and areas across the state.

Here's a snapshot of some of our accomplishments this season:

A few new waterfowl hunting spots were restored in the Paul Olson Wildlife area, which should also offer some great brood rearing habitat.

We reached into Oneida county working in cooperation with US Forest Service and Northern Pines charter school to establish more wildrice beds.
Students from Northern Pines Charter School help in Wild Rice planting

We then worked our way down the lakeshore from Green Bay to Manitowoc to put a bit more habitat along the Lake Michigan shoreline, habitat which acts as a migration corridor for many species of birds.

We just about wrapped up our $100,000 Large NAWCA grant responsibilities as a partner, but the Wolf River water levels just did not cooperate once we were ready, so this one project still remains unfinished.

We also have a few project on the docket for winter due to site conditions, but other than that we will be looking at planning for next season, so get your project ideas to me so we can take a look and see what is feasible.

I have been getting better about sending info of in progress projects on our Like us on FacebookFacebook page. If you check that you will see where I'm at and photos of in progress construction of habitat being created for ducks.

President's Note

null
As I write this I have just returned from a trip to my cottage in northern Oconto County and have seen that the lake is frozen in it's entirety. Well, so much for hoping for another northern migration for the end of the southern waterfowl season. If it's frozen here, it is for sure frozen in Canada as well!

I hope everyone had a happy and safe Thanksgiving with family and friends. I am sure many of you were able to enjoy Wisconsin's great outdoors.

WWA's banquet event series winds to an end this month, but there is still time to attend an event if you haven't made one yet this year. I know the Lakeshore team is planning a great event for December 10th that will be stocked with some amazing raffles, guns and prizes.

Just as we wind down in 2015 your Board and staff are planning for another great year in 2016.

These events would not be possible without the hard work from all of our chapter volunteers throughout the State. I know first hand how much work and time goes into an event for our volunteers. There is event planning, merchandise purchasing and donation solicitation, along with numerous event meetings, mass mailings and meal planning. There are literally 100's of hours spent before a single person comes through the event doors. Then comes the night of.....another full day of setting up manning the games and registration and tear down! All this comes with the satisfaction of being able to raise funds for WWA's three goals; waterfowl habitat, education and legislation.

A Big THANK YOU is not enough to express the Board's appreciation for all that the volunteers do to make this Organization one of the best in the State. It might seem rhetorical, but we could not accomplish anything without you. I take great pride in what this Organization has accomplished, but more so in the knowledge that we have 100's of volunteers that share the same values, commitment and drive. THANK YOU so much for your support and hard work in 2015. I look forward to an equally great 2016!

Bruce Urben, WWA President
Events Update

Hard to believe, but December is here and so I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for another good year for WWA. We have restored numerous acres of wetlands again this year and that's not possible without your generous contributions of cash and hours of your time to the benefit of this Association.

We have one final event in Manitowoc on December 10th qirh our Lakeshore chapter banquet, so I invite you to attend this event and give yourself another chance to take home some great prizes and merchandise before Christmas. This chapter has been working hard to bring you an enjoyable night out and help us make Wisconsin a better place to live. I hope to see many of you there.

Much of the wonderful merchandise you have seen at our events comes from our generous sponsors and donors. Think of them when you do your Christmas shopping this year and support those who have supported us throughout the year.

We still have some 2016 Raffle Calendars available this year and they make great gifts for the holidays. Give a gift that can keep on giving the whole year!

Check out our website and the upcoming events page and make your plans to attend an event this Winter or Spring near you. I am helping many of our chapters plan their events now and more will set more dates soon, so continue checking out the website all year long. Enjoy the last few days of the waterfowl hunting season and I hope to see all of you again next year.

Upcoming Events

While our fall events have wrapped up for the year, we do still have a great late 2015 event and some early 2016 winter events to mark on your calendars!
As always, please check our Events link on our website for all of our upcoming WWA events.
Sponsor Spotlight - Parallel 44/ Door 44 Wineries

As we've all gone out to collect our harvests, from the bounties of our gardens, from the fields, or from wild game, our thoughts turn to the delicious holiday feasts they can provide. Adding a great wine to this can only improve the experience. WWA has enjoyed a great partner in the Parallel 44/Door 44 wineries the past two years, and it certainly has made things better! If you attend our events, you can't miss the terrific wine and winery tasting tour combinations they offer, and once you try them, I'll be you'll be hooked. But don't just take our word for it, they've won Wisconsin's best wines in 2014 and 2015!

Still looking for something fun to do this weekend? Then check out their holiday open house, which returns, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday: http://www.parallel44.com/event-calendar

WWA is very proud to count Parallel 44 among our Sponsor-Donor partners, and we offer our thanks for their support of our Association! Check out this message from their website, parallel44.com:

"Welcome to Parallel 44 Vineyard & Winery: From vine to glass, at our Wisconsin winery we strive to make the finest quality Wisconsin wine. Our wines are made from Northern Varietal Grapes, some grown right here, in our vineyards, on the Frozen Tundra of Wisconsin. We are located just 15 miles east of Green Bay, and just South of Door County, and just North of Milwaukee, in the glacial etched valley of beautiful Northeast Wisconsin, just off the western shore of Lake Michigan (Which we, as Packer Fans, proudly refer to as "The Frozen Tundra."). With a beautiful Wisconsin landscape as our backdrop, we invite you to try our award winning Wisconsin wines and explore your tastes. We refer to ourselves as pioneers in Wisconsin wine making, and as such we are committed to bringing you balanced, fruit forward wines that will delight your palate and celebrate our little slice of the world of wines. Come stroll our vineyard, tour our winery and sip our wines! Parallel 44 Winery - Explore Your Taste!"

2016 Season Setting Dates

Don heard all sort of updates on various waterfowl related issues during the November 4th, 2015 DNR Migratory Committee meeting, but perhaps the one topic that will most affect everyone are the changes to the timeline for setting seasons, as previously mentioned.

Here's a quick snapshot of how things will work, going forward, instead of setting seasons in July and August, as we have for the past several decades.
