Wisconsin Waterfowl Association eNews - July 2015

Here we are, only a few days into meteorological summer, yet the 4th of July always feels like the mid-point to me. As I pointed out to my bride one day last week, the days are getting shorter now, so hunting is just around the corner, and I might as well change the spark plug and oil on the snow blower, and start getting ready! She was unamused. That said, the year is half over, and my favorite half is just beginning. Here's to getting our tasks done, before October's glory!

There's been a lot of action lately, here's some highlights:

  • Last week, Project Director Peter Ziegler & Board President Bruce Urben returned to the Sand Lake Conservation Camp, to help teach the participants about wetlands. This, just a couple of weeks after they met at the Abrams project, to have Peter provide wetland delineation for future potential access trail extensions.
  • Six WWA volunteer applicants have signed up to participate in another "train the trainers" event, coming  yet this summer, to add to our group of qualified instructors for the non-toxic shooting skills program. We expect to hear, perhaps this week, how many will be accepted into the program.
  • Peter & Kelcy worked together to complete our submissions for the reporting on the Duck Stamp funding reimbursement for project work, over the last biennium cycle, while another $50,000 in project funding was approved, for the next 2 year cycle.
  • Following the Board approval of the program, last year, Treasurer; Russ Olson, and I have begun the planning process to develop a campaign to raise awareness and help grow the WWA Endowment Fund, amongst businesses and other potential donors, over the next several years. Recall this fund, established with the Green Bay Community Foundation, has started by investing the funds from several Life Members' contributions, and now we want to continue working to build create a "safety net" for your Association, while providing assurance to donors that their investment in the long-term success of WWA is protected.
  • On June 18th, the Board of Directors met, and heard presentations from WDNR staff on the In-Lieu Wetland Mitigation program, as well as updates on our vetting process for a planned update/upgrade of our website, wisducks.org.
  • Tom Seibert enjoyed another great day representing WWA, at a family event at Cabela's in Richfield (check out the pics and that update, below!)

Tom, Kelcy, and I, plus a slew of volunteers, have been preparing for the second half of July, where we'll have a 3-day sporting clays shoot, a dinner event and golf outing on the same day, followed by another sporting clays shoot! All of this, plus an important grant funding presentation, plus the state waterfowl stamp judging process, and the first post-flyway informational meeting on this year's season structure, all in the last week of the month!

Please consider registering for one of our upcoming events, occurring near you! I'm certain you'll have a great time, and help support your Association, as you do. Every Member counts!

See you on the water,

Project Program Update

Peter Ziegler Wondering what I have been up to in the habitat world? Periodically we post some project updates on our Facebook page which can help to keep you in the loop, but for a little more detail on what is in store for us this summer look no further than this summer project update!

I recently helped out Wisconsin Wetlands Association with a landowner workshop on helping landowners get info on managing and identify how to proceed with wetland restorations. This was a great workshop and if any come to your area, I'd suggest attending one.

This workshop held on June 13th  trained more than 30 landowners in Door County how to learn about and care for their wetlands.

By late June in Wisconsin the grass is taller than me, the mosquitoes are buzzing and the hot and humid air is more prevalent. This is about the time I start to wonder what I'm doing out here, knee deep in water. Well, most surveys have been completed by this time and I can tell you we are on our way to a successful restoration season. As soon as nesting season for grassland birds finishes up, I will be heading to Portage County where WWA will be completing three projects, one after the other, all within a 3-mile radius of each other.

Then, if the water ever gets down to normal summer levels we will be in the New London and Pulaski areas for two additional projects. Also, I can't forget to mention, we will be doing some additional work with our partners who received funding at the Mequon Nature Preserve.   If you have not yet seen this 300+ acre preserve, plan to stop by, it's always open and the water and every wetland you see on the landscape is a result of the work completed by WWA!

Come winter I should be in Fond du Lac and Manitowoc Counties for some cold weather projects. Don't worry, it has not been all planning, this month we finished a small wetland and a 30 acre grassland restoration in Brown County. Located in an area with numerous wetlands this grassland will be a huge benefit for nesting and reproduction.

WWA Events Update

I hope you're all able to take some time and enjoy the summer, especially the upcoming 4th Holiday weekend, before it is all gone. As Don mentioned above, the season certainly moves fast!  Speaking of the season, our summer events are starting up quickly with our St. Croix Valley Chapter banquet coming up at the end of July; the 29th to be exact, so set that date aside for fun and games up north. Before that, you can sharpen up your shooting skills with a round of sporting clays at Wild Wings Sportsman Club in Cambellsport July 17, 18 & 19. We will have 3 prize catergories: Men, Women, Youth plus Sub-gauge Divisions. This is a great event with Shooters Bucket Raffle prizes and guns to win. Plus, every shooter will have a chance to win a 20 Bird Pheasant Hunt! If you want to shoot a different type of birdie, come join us for our Fox Valley Golf Outing also taking place on the 29th of July. Check out our website for the rest of our summer & early fall events near you.

As I mentioned, summer will fly by us, and so now is the time to check out your hunting gear for this fall. Check the strings on the decoys. Make sure the anchors are tied securely and paint the bald spots on the decoys while you're at it.  Sound like a lot of work? Instead, why not attend one of our upcoming events and try and win the latest and greatest Rig'Em Right decoy packages we have put together for our fall banquets. We have the Mega Jerk kit Puddlers package, Long Line Diver package, Early Season Teal package and the Floating Goose decoy package. Just $5 will get you in on these very useful decoy rig raffles. Then, increase your take this season and prepare your game for the freezer with the Cabela's Vacuum Sealer Food Prep Package we've highlighted in past newsletters, which you can win at every WWA banquet this fall.

I know you have heard it a million times before: get out and shoot that shotgun before the season starts. Well, add one more time to that list, because it is so very true. I have shot in our WWA Sporting Clay events for several years now and my kill ratio has increased immensely since I started this. With my schedule of events in the fall, I found little time to practice this on my own. In other words, I failed to take my own advice. My shooting stunk, just ask my hunting partners and dog. At times I found the hunt frustrating and lacking in enjoyment because of my poor shooting. When the days afield are limited, enjoyment and relaxation are what I seek and that is hard to find when you're pressing to make that next shot count. I know we hunt not for the bag but the fun of it, but it is hard to have fun when you string 30 misses together! Success comes with practice and so does the taste of roast duck. We have three WWA Sporting Clay events left this summer, so check out the website for the time and place near you. If you can't make our shoots please find time on your own to get some range time in. Do it for the resource so we don't pile up all those cripples. You will enjoy your outdoor adventure more and so will your 4-legged hunting partner. That is this month's tip for enjoying the outdoors more. Do it for the dog, the resource and your sense of self satisfaction. That's enough of the soap box. Now where are my shells and shooting vest.

Have a happy and safe 4th!

2016 Conservation Calendars Are Here!

Great news! The 2016 calendars have been printed & we are in the process of shipping them out to our sellers across the state! Thanks again to the tireless efforts of the board-directors on the Calendar Committee (Al Klug, Randy Helbach, and Rob Monette) for putting together a pretty amazing new calendar!

As you may recall, we'll have an entirely new program this year - featuring a limited production run of just 4,000 pieces, with improved odds of winning at 1 in 11 or better, and drawings that will be held on the 2nd Monday of each month, featuring the same exciting combination of firearms, Mathew's bows, Parker crossbows, gift cards, WWA apparel, and more - that have made this calendar raffle one to be imitated by others. All of this for the just $20, the same price as when we started this program, six calendars ago - back in 2009!

Keep an eye out for the announcement regarding the start of sales within the next week or so - it's our goal, with the changes made, and a "limited edition" to sell out of this Calendar raffle, well before Christmas, this year.

WWA Participates in Cabela's Outdoor Adventure Day

On June 13th WWA participated in the Cabela's Richfield store location Outdoor Adventure day.  Despite some less than perfect weather in the morning, the day was a great success with many families coming out with children, some of whom had never shot an arrow, BB gun or held a fishing pole before, that were able to participate in a family-friendly hands-on event.

Sponsor Spotlight - Rig'Em Right Waterfowl

For those of you who've chosen to attend any of our fundraisers in the last several years, you've no doubt noticed the gear packages from Rig'Em Right. We updated our assortment of products again for this past spring, and we'll likely bring in another splash of new items, as we prepare for our late summer & fall series of events. The selections of serious rigging solutions, coupled with decoys from several manufacturers make these packages some of the most popular, whenever WWA folks gather together! WWA is very proud to partner with Rig'Em Right, and to feature their products to our Members.

Rig'Em Right is a small, family owned business located on the coast of North Carolina in the small town of Morehead City. Founded in 2006 by current owner and president, Matthew Cagle, Rig'Em Right is now considered a leader in the waterfowl industry. Matthew's passion, and our company's objective, is to create supply the most innovative, functional, durable and cutting-edge waterfowl products in the game. In the words of Matthew, "We may not have the most products, but everything we make is the best in its category. We have the best Decoy Anchors in the business, the best Dog Blind in the business, the best Decoy Bags, the best Flags, the best Jerk Rig, and the list goes on. We will continue to produce things that work and things that last. We will refine any and all products that could be used in the pursuit of waterfowl until we are satisfied that any duck hunter in any place, at any time and in any condition can hit the field with an arsenal of Rig'Em Right products. We are diligent about field testing our products in extreme conditions. Our products MUST deliver when the conditions are nasty."

You'll find a great package of Rig'Em Right products at almost all of our fundraising events this year, featuring products for use in the field, as well as in the water, for ducks & geese. Take a moment, and really look over the selections - you'll be impressed.   Thank you to Rig'Em Right for supporting the works of WWA, and for partnering with us, for the future of Wisconsin's wetland and waterfowl resources! Spring Waterfowl Survey Results Show Good Production Despite Challenging Weather

MADISON -- The 2015 Wisconsin spring waterfowl breeding population survey indicates quality waterfowl production, despite dry conditions experienced during the survey. For all species, population counts showed no significant change from estimates compared to last year.

This survey information, along with two other primary sources of information regarding yearly waterfowl breeding conditions, is used to determine the fall season structure for Wisconsin. The full survey report can be found by searching the Department of Natural Resources website, dnr.wi.gov, for keywords "waterfowl management."

With considerable precipitation in May, wetland conditions improved just in time for brood rearing, and Wisconsin is expected to provide good duck production in 2015.

"In 2015, spring weather came much earlier than the previous two years, which is normally a good sign for breeding waterfowl," said Kent Van Horn, DNR waterfowl biologist. "A large proportion of ducks harvested in Wisconsin are raised in Wisconsin, although there are differences among species."
