OHIO Parents and Families, Hall-Jones Headshot

I hope this message finds you well and looking forward to having your sons and daughters home for the holidays. Not only is it new for us to have students on campus after Thanksgiving, it is also the first year many Ohio University offices and buildings will be closed from December 25 - January 1. If you have any questions about the closure, there is more specific information provided below.

When your student comes home you may notice a difference; maybe a little more confidence, a little more independence, a new haircut, or maybe hear about something new in which they're interested. These are all signs of their learning and independence as young adults. They will likely want time to ease back into their former routine under your roof. Take time to talk about the plan for the holidays - where you plan to go and who is expected to be with you. Your daughter or son will likely want to make time to reconnect with friends and may make plans without your knowledge. Time spent connecting about the family plan and the expectations for your house can ease this transition home during the next few weeks. I hope it is a smooth one for your family and that our students come back to campus in January rested and excited for the spring semester.

On a more difficult note, many of you may have heard that one of our students jumped from the Richland Avenue bridge on Monday evening. I continue to be amazed and proud of our Bobcat family and the way we pull together in a crisis. I spoke with the student's mom very briefly this week, and she was heartened by the support of the Ohio University community. We will continue to be in touch with our student and his family to provide the support they need during this difficult time. This incident is a reminder for all of us to encourage our sons and daughters to seek help if they need it, and to also keep an eye out for each other.

I hope that you and your family enjoy the next few weeks together and that you enjoy having them at home.

Warm regards,Ohio

Jenny Hall-Jones, Ph.D.

Residential Housing Fall Semester Closing
Adams HallAll Ohio University residence halls will officially close on Saturday, December 15th, 2012  at 12:00 noon. Please ensure your student is planning their departure accordingly. Students who remain past the official closing of the residence halls will be charged an hourly late fee. In the event an extenuating circumstance may delay your student's departure, they must contact their Residential Coordinator or Resident Director as soon as possible to discuss their options.

Students needing to remain on campus for any portion of the break period can elect to stay in interim housing. Interim housing is available from Saturday, December 15 through Saturday, January 12, and the cost is $29 / night. A reservation is required and can be made by visiting the Residential Housing website at http://www.ohio.edu/housing/gi/student.cfm.

In relation to personal items, students are permitted to leave personal items in their room during the break. However, we recommend that any valuable or sentimental items be taken home. In addition, it is important that students take any items they need for any portion of the break home with them as they will not be able to access their room again until the halls reopen for spring semester on January 12th.

If your student will not be returning to Ohio University in the spring, it is important that they notify their RA and officially check out of their room and remove all of their belongings before departing campus. If they decide not to return during the winter break, they should contact the Residential Housing central office at 740.593.4090 to schedule an appointment to return to campus to officially check out of their room and pick up their belongings.

Students may return to campus for spring semester beginning on Saturday, January 12th, 2013 at 9:00 am. Classes will resume on Monday,  January 14th.

As always, please feel free to contact Residential Housing if you have any questions or need additional information.  You can contact Residential Housing at 740.593.4090 or [email protected]. Additional information regarding closing can also be found at http://www.ohio.edu/housing/halls/closing.cfm

Dinner with 12 Strangers
Dinner with 12 strangers is a new tradition being brought to Ohio University!  The idea is simple; students attend a dinner with faculty, staff, and alumni to share a good meal, good conversation, and a good time.  Hosts will entertain in their homes or at a local restaurant. The goal is to strengthen the OU community by connecting current students with Bobcat alumni, faculty and staff to help facilitate conversation and contribute any experiences from their profession. The dinners can range from being casual and eating pizza to having a large formal dinner.  The goal is to make our OHIO community seem a little smaller by having graduates and professionals share their on-campus and career experiences with current students. The program provides an opportunity for a great evening of socializing and networking.  Dates will be January 27th, February 24th, March 24th, and April 15th.  More information will be announced soon; visit www.ohioalumni.org/dinner regularly for updates.

SAVE-THE-DATE:  Ohio University Alumni Association will partner with various departments to host Senior Week.  This week long event is targeted to help seniors get more excited about graduation, relive their time at OHIO, and prepare them for life after graduation.  Senior Week will be hosted on April 15th-19th . Visit www.ohioalumni.org regularly for updates.

Veteran Student Program

Veteran Student Services through University College

The staff at University College wanted to make sure that parents and families are aware of American Flag the Veteran Student Program.  Ohio University has over 650 student veterans across our Athens campus, Regional campuses and E-Campus.  Currently, we have several programs and opportunities available to these students. This semester we were able to provide priority registration for veteran students, last year we opened a joint Commuter and Veteran Student lounge in Bromley Hall are now able to offer free tutoring services to those who qualify.  For the second year in a row, Ohio University was named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs.

Melissa Toretch serves as our Coordinator of Special Populations.  Melissa's role is to help veteran students ease the transition from military to college life and be a resource for our veteran students by providing information, guidance, support and programming specific to the needs of our student veteran population.  In addition to Melissa, we also have a veterans certifying official within the Office of the University Registrar who is extremely knowledgeable with the department of Veteran Affairs educational benefits process.  More information about Veterans Affairs through the University Registrar can be found here.  Our Veterans Coordinator can also be reached at [email protected].

There are several departments, students, faculty and staff represented on the OHIO Veterans Committee from across campus.  We are in the midst of planning a Veteran Students Resource Fair for early Spring semester in Bromley Hall just outside the Commuter and Veterans Lounge.
