OHIO Parents and Families,
Fall in Athens is always a wonderful and beautiful time across our campus. This past week has been a historic one here at Ohio University. It has been more than four decades since a sitting president has visited our campus and since our OHIO football team has been ranked in the top 25. I hope that in addition to your students' education that they are taking the opportunity to enjoy life outside the classroom. It is certainly an exciting time to be a Bobcat! The City of Athens Halloween block party is scheduled for this Saturday evening, and with the party come many out-of-town visitors. I want to make you aware of our preparations and our expectations. Ohio University believes in the importance of preparing students to be responsible citizens. We are proud of the fact that the vast majority of our students behave appropriately and make good choices, but it is our collective responsibility to make sure our students and our community are safe. I sent an email to all students this week that can be viewed here. Please take time to talk with your student about appropriate behavior during this weekend and encourage them to share the information below with any guest they may choose to host. Here are some ways you can help: 1. Make time to talk to your son or daughter about Halloween and your expectations for their behavior. Ask about guests who may be planning to visit. (How many? Who are they?) Remind them that if they drink, excessive drinking puts them and others at risk for harm. 2. Remind your son or daughter that they are responsible for adhering to the Ohio University Code of Conduct and the laws of the City of Athens. Our student discipline system is based on the Student Code of Conduct. Students can be referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility for misbehavior that occurs both on and off-campus, in addition to any city/state violations they may incur. Students living in residence halls will be held accountable for the misbehavior of their guests. 3. Ask your son or daughter to do their part. Every member of our community shares in the responsibility for setting and upholding standards. Please join me in encouraging your son or daughter to represent our University with pride this weekend and also to encourage their guests to show respect during their visit. 4. Remind your son or daughter that guests arrested this weekend will be referred to their judicial process at their home university or college. Students living in the residence halls are permitted to have one guest this weekend. During guest registration, Ohio University students were required to provide guest contact information including the home college or university their guest attends. Guests who are arrested will be referred to the student conduct office of their home institution. Based on the contact information provided, we have alerted guests of this in advance of their visit. There is a full list of guidelines provided to students at several locations across campus and in their residence halls. You can view these guidelines here . I appreciate your help communicating this important information.
As always, if there is anything my staff or I can do to assist, please do not hesitate to email or call us at 740-593-1800.
Sincerely, Jenny Hall-Jones, Ph.D. Interim Dean of Students

A note from University College about Academic Advising
| |
Academic Advising Season
A key element in any student's preparation for the upcoming academic semester is meeting with an advisor from his or her college or major. Every student - including those who have not yet declared a major - has an academic advisor assigned and is required to meet with that person each semester before registration. Advisors come from both the faculty and staff ranks and will help students select courses for the upcoming term. Advisors serve an even greater function, however.
Advisors want to help their advisees - your sons and daughters - set themselves up for success. These are men and women who have earned advanced degrees and who know what it takes to be successful in college. All advisors are well versed in Ohio University's general education requirements, and advisors in specific academic disciplines (majors) possess a comprehensive understanding of their discipline. Advisors who work with undecided or undeclared students possess a broad knowledge of all Ohio University degrees. Whether faculty or staff, general or discipline-specific, advisors are an essential resource to help Ohio University students make the most of their time here, graduate on schedule, and determine, "What next?"
Advising is not a one-way street, though. Students must be active participants in the process. This means that they must review their DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) and consider course options before they come to any advising meeting. Additionally, students should come armed with questions. In meeting with their advisor, students will be interacting with a professional who, once upon a time, was an undergraduate student. Advisors understand the process and can help students navigate the course more successfully. It is vital that students make the most of this opportunity to learn about the potential of the degree they have declared or are considering. The advising relationship can be a powerful one if students approach it collaboratively.
So please encourage your sons and daughters to consult with their academic advisors about more than just courses. Doing so will lead to a richer educational experience. Encourage them, too, to give this semester their best effort and to remember that it is not over until the last final has been submitted.
Greg Lester, Ph.D.
