Housing Market Update and Summer Reading Recommendations

Believe it or not, the year is almost half way done. Despite the challenges associated with uncertainty from the weather in the first quarter and the lagging housing market data, most builders we have spoken to are either on plan or ahead of plan for the year.

If you look at the current housing market data and the latest projections for the year, it might look like the industry is just cruising along as planned. However, the actual path to this point has been filled with a great deal of maneuvering and adjustments of plans, up and down.

Despite all of the trials and tribulations, I have remained steadfast that 2014 is the year of the recovery. I have held firm to my 1.1 million housing starts forecast and still believe the industry will reach that mark this year. It is not just my gut telling me this. Every builder I speak with is telling me their biggest challenge is managing growth right now. After the run we have had over the past eight years, managing growth is a challenge welcomed by all builders.

Propane Education and Research Council Joins Builder Partnerships

Builder Partnerships is pleased to announce the addition of The Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) into our program.

PERC is a check-off program established, operated, and funded by the propane industry. The only energy council of its kind, PERC leads safety and training efforts among propane retailers, builders, construction professionals, vehicle operators, farmers, and consumers and drives technology development to expand adoption of propane as a clean, domestic, and affordable energy source. PERC programs benefit a variety of industries including residential building.

"We feel that Builder Partnerships offers us a unique way to network with residential builders and remodelers in an ever-changing marketplace," said Bridget Kidd, PERC's director of residential and commercial programs. "Propane can provide a whole-home energy solution that maximizes efficiency and meet today's increasingly stringent sustainable building requirements. By joining Builder Partnerships, we hope to connect with more residential building professionals and share the facts about propane's comfort, low emissions, and energy efficiency."

Building Brands and Reaping Rewards
By InSinkErator

Economics professionals and marketing experts alike agree that consumers are more willing to pay a higher price for brand-name products than they are for those that do not have an established brand name. This is because consumers have learned to expect that products with well-respected brand names have earned their reputation over long periods of time by consistently delivering high quality products. If you doubt that brands hold value for consumers, consider the Brand Finance Top 500 report this year in which Apple's brand is valued at over $100 billion and Coca-Cola at over $33 billion. Their brand reputation makes them a clear choice to consumers, for whom the brand name serves as an intrinsic quality "cue."

By extension, this principle can be applied to the home building industry, in which a house may contain distinguished branded products or non-branded products - and frequently both. If you want to enhance your builder brand and charge a premium at the same time, pay close attention to the brands you offer. They reflect on you and your brand - positively or negatively-and impact your ability to command top-dollar from home buyers. If you are looking at garbage disposals, for example, consider the leading brand that's been around for more than 75 years, which is the same one endorsed by 8 out of 10 plumbing professionals and recognized by consumers the world over. Including this brand - InSinkErator - in kitchens, and letting your home buyers know it's there, is one more way you can charge a premium for your quality housing product that buyers will be happy to pay for.

5 Benefits of Ceiling Fans
By Progress Lighting

There are many benefits to incorporating ceiling fans into your home's design that go beyond cooling off a room. Using ceiling fans throughout the home greatly reduces energy costs, while also providing comfort, style and beautiful lighting.

Our partners at Progress Lighting unpack the top five benefits of ceiling fans which include gains in both fashion and function.

1. Ceiling fans lower energy costs

Ceiling fans can help lower your electric bill by up to 30 to 40 percent. While a ceiling fan doesn't actually decrease the temperature of a room, the draft makes the room feel cooler - allowing you to raise the thermostat and be just as comfortable.
