Information Silos: Data Out Standing in a
Stroman Headshot
Field?
By Audrey Stroman

Imagine being able to have the exact information at your fingertips at at the very moment you need it so you can make the next important decision for your homebuilding company. Then, dreaming on, imagine you can broadcast this information to all the players in the organization so that everyone moves in concert.

It's a simple idea but in practice, it seldom happens.

Organizations are full of data. Some of it is timely, some is outdated and some is just plain incorrect. Which information do you use? How quickly can you get to it? As in every business, homebuilders fall victim to having silos of knowledge-data that is housed in such a way that the individuals who need it can't get to it. The silos are built and maintained by your organization - by process (or lack thereof) and by mindset. A common example of a data silo for a homebuilder: prospect and customer data that is in sales files that are not shared with production. Production has another set of data on the same customer for the same house build that then is not shared with sales or the customer service department which has yet another set of files on the same customer. Sound familiar?

Compete & Win: Seven Keys to Success

Haifleigh Headshot

By David Haifleigh,TheFutureWorks

Ten Million Dollars.

According to Chuck Shinn, "The Profit Doctor," and founder of Builder Partnerships, many of the homebuilder members of Builder Partnerships throw out the ten-mil number as their goal-what they are trying to produce in capital-at-work so they can fulfill on their lifestyle goals. That's what they're after with their businesses. Ten-mil.

This is not top 1%, this is top half percent. So it's safe to say that these homebuilders are playing to win-they're not just playing. This isn't a hobby to them. It isn't casual. So what do you need to do to compete and win at the highest levels of homebuilding? Here's an overview of where to start:

  1. Develop your aspirations. Know what the future you're trying to produce looks like for your business. Aspirations sustain us. Aspirations keep us going when things get tough. Find your passion. It's a 40 year game (age 22 to 62), a marathon, not a sprint. Do you have a higher purpose for what you're doing? Bringing families together? Helping active adults, whose savings have been reduced, afford the next chapter in their lives? Find one. You will need the motivation.

Uponor Logic: The Smart Choice for Plumbing and Heating Homes
By Uponer

Uponor logo

When it comes to building a home, traditional systems and concepts are now being challenged by "smarter" technologies that make a structure more safe and sound as well as cost- and energy-efficient.

With the introduction of a durable, flexible plastic piping product called PEX (an acronym for crosslinked polyethylene) there is growing realization that traditional copper or CPVC plumbing and forced-air HVAC systems aren't necessarily the best choice.

In fact, PEX is now installed in more new-home construction for plumbing than copper and CPVC combined - so the word is catching on in the industry and professionals are taking notice to all the benefits PEX provides.
